Actually it uses 215watt, but by default the dual cards use less than 2x the power because they have some shared components, I'm sure it is possible with the full SP's, although they would be pushing it.... The gtx295 has 2x the gtx275's shader cores etc, and didn't sacrifice anything, so why would it not be possible for this card?, or are you just hoping they can't. If they can take a card that uses more power than a 470, double it up and get it under 300watt, they can absolutely do it with this
from what I see, the games nvidia win by a good margin are the ones the game is optimized to run on nvidia hardware. otherwise the 5870 is defiantly a better card when you consider power and heat issues etc.
Hear hear!, down with Nvidia, ATI is the best, Nvidia are socialists!, how dare they compare the 480 to the 5870 when it is closer in price to the 5870 than the 5970, lol Hypocrisy again. I always hear ATI people saying "but what about price/performance" Yet all of a sudden now it can only be one or the other, the 480 is well justified in it's price seeing the performance gains. I'm sure if you did a price/performance graph of the 480 to the 5970 that the 480 would win, but then you people would be saying "but that's not fair, it;s a dual card" double standards FTW DOWN WITH UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE < MUAHAHA
Quit assuming that anyone who says something that isn't claiming Nvidia's sh1t smells like roses, is against Nvidia or want them to fail. Its my opinion that unless Nvidia can reduce power (either by cutting clocks/SPs) or another respin that reduces power load you are going to see a chip that is only marginal of the 480 and less so with the 470.
Don't regret it at all Wow... well to tell the truth I don't really regret my purchase now, 5850CF still faster than 480, and uses less power than something that would beat it! That said, I almost wish I had waited till the 6xxx series, or at least a 58xx refresh, but considering I came from SLI'd 8600gts 256mb cards... yeah
Prices change, performance on particular games does not (unless there are better drivers) so the main variable is price It should be ignored since the price of these cards will eventually --> £0 so idk why they didn't show performance against the ati 9999999 or whatever it's called :/
This is not my point, i was just respond about the 5970 fact... and the guy who claim the 480 equal the 5970.-- or each bench we see show the 480 is just uppoer the 5870 and really don't show the 480 coming closer of the 5970. Is upgrade from 285 > 480 is a good idea ? no... the good idea will be to upgrade to the 470...
i agree with you also, ive never liked the term crown it sounds... idk just doesnt sound right, but ever since i started coming here ive seen it used in reviews. anyway yea im not saying that the power consumption doesnt suck nor does the heat, but a lot of the people on here just want the best of the best and have all the money to spend on this kind of stuff. me personally yea my family doesnt have a whole lot of money and we have a brand new baby so ive been putting all our computers in sleep mode or off at night to save every last cent we can. but as the article mentioned and again what it all boils down to is that regardless of everyones gripes it does what it said it would do, be the fastest single gpu on the market.
hey congrats on the baby! sorry for my rudeness. una besote a las hermosos/hermosas. is the baby called fermosa? Jajaja
lol that's insane, so you think spending $350 for a 20% increase is better than spending $499 for a 40% increase in performance, judging from some of the benches the 470 is between the 5850 and 5870, not enough of an increase to justify the $, if I was running a gtx260 then yes, but that's just throwing money away. I really don't think anyone said the 480 is equal to the 5970, nor do I think it ever will be, but it will get closer, and the price will come down, and the performance will go up with drivers, so the 400 series isn't that bad at all, I can see how people owning a 5870 would think that, because for you there is no point, just like when the 5870 came out, there is no way I could justify an upgrade ( sidegrade considering the need for a physx card ). But for me...I need a new GPU, the 470 isn't that great, the 480 is much more appealing, I want a gpu that will last for 2-3 years.
Nothing, I just enjoy watching people saying "FAIL!", when that is exactly what I said when the 5870 came out, and yet the performance has dramatically increased since launch. If you don't like the performance then just smile and be glad you bought your GPU when you did. I sure as hell wasn't posting "FAIL!" in 5870 review threads on launch, because my self esteem is not tied to my belongings... @crowTrobot Agreed, merry 4x0 day! I think i'll be buying from overseas this time. even though the exchange rate is like 90aus cents/u.s dollar, the price will be 30% more here... Zotac amp edition...mmm nerdgasm EDIT: lol@ semi-accurate forums, every fermi thread has been moved or locked, i think charlie is going into hibernation, more so when a 470x2 comes out, and when the drivers get better and better, he may go into a coma
Excellent review Hilbert TBH I was expecting a little more power from Fermi in this generation, but something that can not be denied is that they are really fast. Nvidia has done a great job providing brute force at the cost of power consumption and heat. It is up to you to decide what s more important for you. I hope with this ATI 5xxx cards are reduced in price Also it is sad how this thread is becoming a fanboy war.
Right now we could start taking screen shots of what people posted in the 470/480 threads and post them again once the ATI 6000 series comes out, whatever their comments and denials will be then, I'm sure it will be equally as funny.
. i wanted to sell my 5870s and get one 480 . but i wont because 480 is to loud .performance is good for single card but it is soo laud. you guys shoud hear it live. i heard it over the phone and could not belive how much noise that card can produse.i have little baby and i want here to have nice dreams.i bought afternarket cooler for 5870s because her. that card should performe 30% better to justify loudnes and tdp.
Somehow i fear this is escalating into a bitch fest, i know some childish people posted fail in large font, but those sort of people are not worth the effort even replying to, so for the sake of the thread i think some should try and calm down abit.
Agreed, the 400 series has an MIMD instruction set, which is something the 6000 series will have, yet when the 6000 series is released it will be "revolutionary". Amazon.com says it will not ship electronic good to AUS...how disappointing, guess i'll have to wait...
ok review.. but... 35 pages.....? The flash line charts don't do much for me (and don't work on many mobile devices), I find the bar charts easier to "take in". The "how to set up your monitor/gamma" section at the start of every gpu review seems a little redundant - wouldn't it make sense to have that as a separate section/article and provide a link to it? I'd imagine this would allow you to refresh that content more often as well (instead of it being embedded in 100+ other reviews). Sorry, long day at work and feeling grumpy - cheers As for the 470/480... If I didn't already have a 4870x2, and if either was actually available, I'd be tempted. The other big drawback is the power usage; I don't mind high power usage on my workstation/gaming pc, but such demanding specs don't make it very useful from: -A hand-me-down perspective (for family or friends, my Mom's Dell will not handle that wattage) -As an upgrade for my HTPC (when my need to upgrade hits me again 1+ years from now...) May just wait for a re-spin.
