Ha, yeah I could imagine that was pretty bad. But at least for him it made no difference to performance. Going from the Ti4200 to the FX5600 was a DOWNgrade, no doubt about it. The FX series was a flop, even the 5900XT I managed to get later on died within a few days! Last Nvidia card I had til the 7900GT!

It wasn't all that bad. XD

I upgraded from a TNT2 32MB to an FX5200...and then someone donated an FX5900NU to me.

Here is a very good link:

    http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=117000

There are heaps of images showing unofficial benches and the card itself. Keep in mind, these are not the final benchmark even if they are real.

I'm sure drive updates and other feedbacks from testers will improve the card when official reviews come out.

Based on those info, It seems they have a very hot card since the fan has a rating of 12v 1.8amp! and then this news:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/geforce-fermi-gf100-gtx-480-gtx-470,9926.html

The super high TDP seems to confirm the need for a high power fan.

aside from that. The bench results shows that FERMi is really much faster in the tessellation area. So the card objective is to be "future proof" although with such high TDP I doubt it will last very long in the real world.

I wonder if we are gonna see the revival of the dustbuster!

Oh yes, ATI is just itching to launch their eyefinity series radeons. For me this an innovative simple solution which NVdia do not have in Fermi.

I doubt there are many who would buy the card for 3x2 screen gaming or even 3x1 screen gaming. However, such a card is a fantastic solution for productivity purposes! A cheap 5750 eyefinity can easily pump 5 screens full of images. I can have such big surface area for doing drafting, engineering, internet, and gaming. That is a real big step forward in PC computing.

I had Ti4200 also, good value card for adequate Doom3/Half-life2 play. All my old AGP cards got extended service in other people's pc's. My first decent card, the GF2Ultra is still working in my mates pc lol.

hehe.. that's exactly the first thing i do too after unboxing :)

i am looking forward to build a 480GTX SLi - i wanna get rid of the crappy ATi 5970 - i just have had problems with it, always is something wrong or not working properly.. playing around with drivers and tweaks, i am just tired of it

i never had that with nvidia (just experience)

This is where after-sales support is crucial. There are many positive points for Nvidia users. Ati like to jump on the latest dx and get cards out asap. The 6month+ gap between the latest Ati and Nvidia products is made out to be more than it's worth. It's only recently that AMD/Ati has even come out of the red. This isn't so for Nvidia who has a great dev relations port-folio, wider market coverage and positive bank balance.

Many people shouting about not needing physx and going opencl. Physx WILL eventually be opencl so that's not even an argument really since opencl is not magic. The libraries still have to be written. So, whenever nvidia decide theres enough of their dx11/12 hardware out there they will go opencl. Most Nvidia users probably won't notice the transition. Ofcourse, this will mean Ati users can use it too. Nvidia will watch the market and hold-off from releasing their opencl version as long as possible especially if they still use cuda as a bridge.

In the end, most games fully support Nvidia so if you want the best long-term experience, then, it's definately Nvidia.

AMD has an advantage for the future in that they have their own fabs. This will play out soon, but, not fast enough to affect us much this year.

I wanna know where they're getting all these low minimum frame rates from. I have two 5770s which you would assume would have even lower minimum frame rates, but I don't have an issues.

Yeah, like the WIC bench. Who has ever seen FPS spikes like that? All their benches are like that, if the 5870 actually played that way no one would ever use the thing.

Also it looks like Nvidia (or whoeever is doing the benches) is doing what ATI bencher's/fanboys/ATI did with the 4870x2 which was show off it's VRAM by benching it at unplayable settings. Crysis, maxed out, 4x AA, 2560x1600? That's just a RAM race. The benchers were specifically trying to run the 5870 out of memory by using unplayable settings to get low minimum FPS for the 5870.

In the benches, the average is the same in most games. That means the 5870 is really just a 2GB version away from parity.

EDIT: Holy ****, the fan takes more than twice as much power to run as ATI's!

strongly disagree.. hardcore gamers play any game whether they are old or new.
    maybe u mean enthusiast?

Yes, you're right. I've finished again "No one lives for ever" some days ago. In fact, I play old games frequently as I get more fun from them than from the modern ones, but I ignore why. I've played several modern games of 2009/2010, but still I am not fully satisfied with the results except for Pro Evolution Soccer 10. The graphics are great but... something is missing, but I don't know what the heck it is. Maybe it is related to immersion. There is little magic now and too much technology.

It's sorta hard to say hardcore gamers play any game, and enthusiasts only new. I'd say graphic enthusiasts play only new games, but that isn't exactly true (eg Descent II or 2d style games that aren't made anymore).

In my experience hardcore gamers tend to stick to a collection of games that they love regardless of age. While they tend to ignore age within their collection they won't typically go out hunting for games that are a decade old.

Enthusiasts on the other hand come in a lot more flavors. There are your typical hardware enthusiasts on this forum; then there's creative enthusiasts; enthusiasts who specialize predominantly in one game and so forth. In my experience modders and specialist type enthusiasts will play games regardless of age. They've often been modding the same game for many years, or in the case of MMO specialists they may have been running a server for like a decade (eg RunUO / UO gamers Hybrid). Of course almost any enthusiast in that vein will also be a hardcore gamer, but sometimes enthusiasts will spend more time modding / drawing / scripting than playing games.

^ I play games from the 80's and early 90's through emulation a lot more than I do modern games. Evertime I buy a new game I'll play it for a bit then lose interest quickly and return to what I know. Wouldn't class myself as enthusiast or hardcore, casual I guess.
