"For the GTX 480 we know that the reference design board is expected to have 1536 MB (1.5 GB) of memory. "

It is covering where the PCB revision is printed, the same reason the chip is partially blacked out.

    Considering the number of things blacked-off, and the following;
Why do I get a little bit of a hunch this is a redone GTX280 board?

    LOL.

That's the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. How can you get a "re-done" PCB?

Huge chip, direct-contact heatpipes and no DisplayPort.

Great, it looks like the fan is directly above the VRM's.
    It's a 5970 all over again (VRM's overheating). :(

People talk about how big this GPU is, but it looks no bigger from the 8800 GTX (from the heatspreader that is, the actual GPU may be a different story)

we know the actual die size, the heatspreader size doesn't really matter all that much

    GPU: die size, transistor count

    G80: 484 mm2, 681 million
    G92: 324 mm2, 754 million
    GT200: 576 mm2, 1400 million
    GT200b: 470 mm2, 1400 million
    fermi: 590 mm2, 3200 million

    RV870: 334 mm2, 2150 million

    fermi is the biggest GPU

true, the post was more of a post for another thread here, they measured the heatspearer size and were saying "WHOA!!" to it, and it just made no sense to me, as it seemed normal... lol

However, 590mm2, compared to GT200 576mm2, isn't that big of a difference even so, so it's not like "OMG UBER CRAZY SIZE" like some people seem to be going on. lol

you can see it on this pic that the poster above posted, not sure what it means but I guess they wanted it hidden.
