Recommendations for a new card?

Hey guys,

I'm new around here but after lurking for a few days, this place seems like a great place to ask questions and such.

I'm planning to build a new rig but really don't know what video card to get. I currently have a Geforce 6200.

Specs for new computer is:
Intel i5 2.66ghz
Asus P7P55LX mobo
1440x900 screen

I plan to do some light gaming on it and nothing that really takes serious power (heaviest is probably TF2), my budget isn't really that big, under $100.

9800GT would be a good choice and are usually under a hundred bucks.

 

you should be able to get a 9800GT at this price. and it should easily handle most games including TF2. Have a look at these.

What about something around $70? The 9600?

 

Yeah sure it will do the job.

 

You can get 4850 for nearly 100$, that would be a much better choice..

 

A 9600 for $70? Did you make sure that it's 256-bit, GDDR3, and 512 MB? If so, that''ll work. You don't want to buy the 128-bit, GDDR2, or 256 MB versions. Most importantly do not get the 256 MB version. If you can't find a non-castrated 9600 I would go with the XFX 9800 GT in Azarobi's link. It's worth the extra $20-30.

 

I just noticed that the $70 9600's are GSOs and further reading reveals that it's really just a repackaging of one of the 8800's. >.< So I guess be spending some monies.

 

How about 4850 1GB (Biostar) / Sapphire 4850 512MB for 105$ , newegg

 

If I were you I would either go for the 4850 or the 9800GT as someone has said. Also if you can spend a little more cash you could easily buy a GTX 260 & stay with for quite a long time

 

The most logical choice as far as price/performance goes would be the cheapest 1GB 4850 you can find... considering it can be found for around the same price as the 512MB counterpart.

 

You can find GTS250 1GB for less than 100$ (i got mine for 90$)

Its faster than 4850 or 9800GT...

 

Uh, unless my memory is screwed, no, just no. A 4850 should be somewhere around a GTX260, so whatever this GTS250 is (re-branded GeForce 8 technology no doubt) I seriously doubt it outperforms a 4850.

 

You telling me 4850 is fast as GTX260? :S

If you check some benchmarks actually GTS250 outperforms 4850 in Crysis,UT3,MW2 and loose in FarCry 2,Hawx...GTS250 is little bit cheaper aswell.

 

Gtx 260 or a GTS 250. I went with a gtx 260 and its great.

 

I just bought myself a BFG GTX 260 from Best Buy, as a late Christmas present.

I am running it at GTX 285 speeds. Rock solid stable and could go further. The only thing missing is the extra 24 Stream Processors... That are only "missing" on paper, and not real world performance.

I can run Crysis, Crysis Warhead, GRiD, DiRT, DiRT 2, Far Cry 2, FSX, FS9, Source Engine games, Mirror's Edge and any other recent game in my collection at max settings; games that are not Crysis, of course.

I started out with a 9600 GT 512MB and while it is a good card, it's not a GTX 200 series. And these cards WILL have a lot of life left in them even as Fremi, and the new ATI 5800 series come out.

I just got sick of ATI drivers; Nvidia beats them hands down, IMO. And most games are coded to perform better on Nvidia (with Physx) anyway, so it is a win-win in my book.

 

without a doubt the best card for around 100.00 dollars is the 4850 and yes lot's faster than a 9800 and faster than the 250 in most games exp. when aa is used.

 

9600GT seems like the perfect fit. It will run most games at very respectable rates and comes in way under $100.

Well, it means it's not stock. It also means increased performance.

That's all it means.
