    2 5870s are more expensive than a single 5970.

    A 5970 is longer than a 5870 however.

Heating issues might occur if u OC a 5970. A 5970 at stock speed is lower than a 5870 and might not OC to match 2 5870s in CF.

Therefore which combo would u guys get?

Well it all depends what your upgrade plan look like.

If you are gonna settle with 2x gpus then I would get two 5870s, but if your pondering tri fire then I would go 5970 + 5870

Wow the american forums are always more hardcore than the ones in my country.

    I like that.

Over there ppl were telling me the 5970 is better cos it's cheaper and less heat and easier to OC.

If i ever ever want to CF a 5970 pls remind me to change the rest of my stuff.

Id go for the 5970 simply due to power and heat issues AS WELL AS future proofing.
    With a crossfire setup a 5970 is a setup for a dual 5970 setup ;)
and its one pcb, even if its 5 feet long.

According to the French site hardware.fr there is a perf issue with the 5970.
    http://www.hardware.fr/articles/777-18/dossier-amd-radeon-hd-5970.html

As you can see in the picture, two 5850 in crossfire are performing better in almost every conditions.

It is possible that their card had a problem but they did not notice any artifact or so...

    The config used is:
Intel Core i7 975 (HT et Turbo turned off)
    Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme
    6 Go DDR3 1333 Corsair
    Windows 7 64 bits
    Forceware 195.55
    Catalyst 8.663.1 beta4

Suppose your motherboard and case are important factors,

might not be able to fit the length of the 5970 and then again might not have enough room for two 5870's.

Of course they are using default values :) It is the case for every card in the graph. As far as I know tests on Guru3d page are also done at stock, right?

They even tried to "downclocked" the two 5870 to the same values as the 5970 and they have noticed that the 2x5870 are really performing better.

Problem with the onboard PCI-E switch or problem with the driver, they are saying that so far they have no clue about what the issue could be.
That could be an “isolated” problem with their system or graphic card...
I can not remember if during 5970 Guru's review, a similar problem has been identified.

Simple... It's impossible for me to find another HD5850 for crossfire anywhere, so I've ordered HD5970. Yes it's not two HD5870 but it's damn fast enoug !.

the thing witht he 5970 is it is made for overclocking, atleast that is what amd has said. there should be no reason that once the 5970 is set at the same speeds as the 5870 it should perform around the same.
if it does not perform the same maybe there is a limitation with the pcie but i doubt it or something else.

I go 2x5870 crossfire all the way unless you got my motherboard with only 2 slots and you really need 4 GPUs for some insane reason then it would be 2x5970 crossfire all the way simple!:3eyes:

If money isnt a factor than i think I would opt for 2 5870's this time... But 5970 or 2 5870's are almost pointless unless you have an overclocked core I-5-7-8-9.... My phenom II at 3.8 ghz will surely not handle two 5870's to there fullest potential... infact I dont even think I-7's can run them to there fullest potential as of now.

Unless of course your using a 30 inch monitor or eyefinity then I am sure it would be even steven.. or atleast close.

What do you guys think about an overclocked Phenom II at 3.8 ghz and 2 5870's in CF config at 1920x1200? Cause thats what I am looking at for my setup if I upgrade.
