I can vouch for an OCZ Vertex, got one myself. Just be sure to update it to the latest firmware before installing your OS.
I dunno about you, but I've heard plenty of good things about the Intel X25-M 80GB SSD myself, and seems to be the best bang for the buck. I'd look into that one, if I were you.
Intel X25-M G2 80gb Very good SSD with the best random read and write performance.. and very good cost ratio these days
agreed intel x25-m g2 first choice/maybe even the kingston alternative(same drive but with a kingston sticker) ocz vertex..possibly the gskill falcon II..also patriot torq i believe it is, is suppose to be a great drive as well..
in that case, look at the vertex, most people wont notice the difference between the 2, except in capacity.
Well, bought the Corsair Extreme 64 gig, with 64 meg cache. Not fitted it yet as it doesnt come with any instructions.
Intel X-25m G2 and OCZ vertex seem to the best ssd atm, i personally own a X-25m in my laptop and its been great, no problems at all.
i read somewhere that the patriot torque series was really good, but i have not ventured into ssd myself yet...too expensive
Well, here in the US, Newegg is bringing in a new batch tomorrow, according to their ETA, I'll be sure to jump on one then, and add a 2.5" - 3.5" converter to turn it into a desktop drive, and Ghost Windows onto that, and see what happens. I've been hearing some negative customer reviews on the most recent crop before this, since it seems like Newegg's secretly selling refurbed X25-Ms, which sux. Hopefully this new crop will be brand spanking new drives, tho... If not, I'm probably gonna change my mind and go with a Corsair P128 instead. Actually, wasn't Intel phasing the X25-M out in favor of their new SLC $800 64GB SSD now? I'm hoping that Intel's not discontinuing the X25-M at this stage, considering how much more expensive SLC is over MLC right now. I'm probably gonna go with the 80GB MLC over the 64GB SLC for now when it comes back in tomorrow, if I'm lucky.
No worries, mate. Basicly, treat it like any other hard drive. First, format it with with a "Quick" format. DO NOT DO THE LONG FORMAT, IT WILL SCREW UP THE DRIVE!!! The load it in your rig, set bios to boot from dvd/cd drive and drop in your os disk. That is it. BTW, I will note I have the 128 gig with 128 meg buffer for superior performance, especially in writing.
Yes, I was definitely looking into one of these...seems like Newegg's sold out, but Amazon still sells 'em, even tho they are $5 more, and they don't combo deal it like Newegg does, where Newegg'll throw in the Icy Dock desktop adapter for free, either...sad that Amazon won't throw in the Icy Dock unless you pay the extra $25 or so. Wish Corsair'd throw in an adapter of their own like Patriot does, but I guess that the P128 is more geared towards laptop/netbook use over gaming desktops at this point, but I may still go with this one. EDIT: Actually, Guru3D's official recommendation IS the Corsair, so I feel that this may be a better SSD than the Intel after all. Seems like this may be the better bang for the buck. After hearing that Newegg's been selling refurbed Intel SSDs, seems like they're putting more emphasis on the Corsairs and Patriots at this point. All right, I'll go for the P128, then, just better update the firmware on it right when I stick it into the case, and transfer Windows over to the SSD.
Well i started to think about Samsung PB22-J series too... They seem solid and fast(afterall they make controllers too right )... But of course intel is the fastest with E and M series... Here is a bench: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-flash-ssd-charts/benchmarks,48.html
Fitted the drive, and a fresh copy of Win 7. Windows takes about 23 seconds to boot up from pressing the button to fully loaded (including putting my password in), and shuts down in about 5 seconds. It feels much more 'snappy', opening up apps etc quicker. The only game i have put on it is CoD6: MW2. I play multi player, and the maps take around 3-5 seconds to load. I am very happy so far.
