it says the core speed is at 725. so does that mean 5970 = 5850x2 not 5870x2?

No it means they reduced the clock speed on both cores to keep the power levels down...

On the upside this means the card will be quite overclockable with a slight voltage increase.

Anyone with a 5870 already, it'll be stupid to upgrade. People with a 4870 or a 4870 x2 or lower it's worth buying.

Why is that? A 4870x2 is pretty much a 5870 anyway.

Either way i think im just going to plump for another 5870 as with the prices going up £40 since release, i don't think ill be able to afford it.

How so? Guru3D's own reviews show them trading blows with eachother. None really has a clear win. Not quite the definition of smoking.

Yeah it seems that when Crossfire doesn't scale well the 5870 beats out the 4870x2 and when it does scale well the 4870x2 beats out the 5870. Not much between them at the moment. Although the 5870 is more consistent being a single GPU solution.

my 4890 still plays everything, I really like the 5870 but might be worth skipping a generation if the 68xx will be out so soon

We're still talking a year after the release of the 5870 here, which is roughly 6 months after the release of Fermi.
