AMD today updates their most high-end processor to a new revision the Phenom II X4 965 BE processor with stepping C3 -- and this new model is all about energy efficiency. The revised Phenom II X4 965...

Wow, competitive with the i7 in 3 of 4 games. Still has a ways to go in other apps, but a bargain for its price. Hopefully AMD will be competing for the high end again in a little bit :)

    Thanks for the review

// typo on the overclocking page first paragraph, 956 should be 965 .

Im a little confused though, in the verdict, the article says that the i7 proves that its still in a class of its own although the 965 without an oc beat it in 3 of the 4 gaming benchmarks......how does that put it in a class of its own? Mabey i missed something?

Well maybe im missing something aswell, because i can't see what you talking about here lol

I noticed that a stock clocked 965 only slightly beats a stock clocked 940 in two of the games but only marginally and i think only at 1920*1200 or something.

Perhaps you've misinterpreted which was the line for the OC'ed 965 and the line for the stock clocked 965.

The non gaming benchmarks show the i7 trouncing the phenom by 25-30% most of the time. In gaming the i7 truly shines in multi-GPU solutions and not by small margins (when there's no bottlenecks). The i7 also gets a larger overclock normally.

The i7 and the AMD chip are typically overclocked to similar clock speeds. An i7 2.93ghz running on par with a 4ghz amd chip can also be oc'd to 4ghz. This yields a 1070mhz increase for the i7 versus a 600mhz increase for the amd chip.

The Phenom II 965BE is a better gaming CPU then the conclusion admits...

Would've liked to have seen 2560 x 1600 resolution used in addition to the others, since they tested with the 5870. Let's face it, if you are gonna spend that much money for a video card you are crazy if you don't have at least 1920 x 1080. With cheap 19", 22", or 24" LCDs these days, people should really start looking at 3-way if they are buying this card. I currently run a Matrox TripleHead2Go with a couple of 22" and a 19" and my GTX 260 216 is holding on ok, until my 5850 shows up.

This CPU looks like a GREAT gaming CPU at higher resolutions compared to the i7 940 from their graphs... The i7 940 only managed to beat the 965BE in one game and they were even or won by the 965BE in the others!!!

Seriously, i don't use my CPU cycles for much else then gaming... so I would rather save several hundred on a PC setup and put the extra money into the video card, like the 5850 or 5870, maybe 5850 xfire later, :)

Also, if you are going to overclock any of the Phenom II, it is a good idea to to bump up the NB speed, which is based off the HT speed, at least on my PC. So I would have liked to seen this CPU overclocked that way, but I guess I'll find out for myself since I just replace my 9950 last night with a Phenom II 925, 95w C3 version... it runs at 2.8Ghz stock and uses a lot less juice then the 9950 ESPECIALLY when OCing... I didn't have time to try much. But my PC setup would get just over 400 watts at the outlet with the 9950 @ 3.2Ghz @ 1.45v full load (stress test in AOD) I think it got up around 47-49 C with my Zerotherm BTF90.

Now, the 925 C3 rev. on the other hand.... used about 10-15w more than the 9950 at idle (about 230-235w compared to 220w for the 9950) for some reason even with c1e state enabled? But running at FULL load? LOOK OUT!!!
It only got up to around 300w at stock default @ 2.8Ghz @ 1.25v... about 4-5w more for 3.5 Ghz @1.35v and another 5w more for 3.733 Ghz @ 1.4v which meant I was running my HT at 266 and NB at 2660 Mhz !!! Default is HT 200 x10 = NB 2000Mhz. Like I said, didn't have much time last night to fine tune voltages or anything or even run many tests, but it was stable running the AOD Stress test for 5 minutes and temps didn't get very high.

At 3.733 Ghz @ 1.4v my high temp was only 37-38 C, which made me very happy. I didn't even know what it was running at idle until the test ended.... and I watch the temp drop, and drop... and drop... it even bobbed under 20 c!! :) now, this is in my basement and probably only about 63 F So it is running in a "cool" environment :) So yeah, I think any of these C3 rev CPUs are going to be great gaming CPUs and save money on electricity too.

CPU reviews are improving guys. resident evil was a nice new addition. far cry 2 not so much as we've seen.

keep poking around for more popular games where we can see the difference between platforms.

Also, this AMD cpu is looking good.
