has to be cod 1 plus 2..or half-life. for me in the good ol days was captive...(admittedly this did have some rpg elements to it)
All sucked major c0ck until Call of Duty series. Yeah, there were alot of fun games, like moha, quake, doom, half life, . But Call Of Duty was a breakthrough with its flawless gameplay, perfect right click - iron sight system and perfect fov. Definitely set a standard for first person shooters.
Im not to sure to be fair, theres alot of obvious ones that have been mentioned but i agree with farcry, thats showed a great open world that hadnt been seen really in fps, crysis for a graphics benchmark. theres alot of console shooters i love aswell.
Wolfenstein 3D hands down, with out it there would be no first person shooters. All others just refined the genre.
Are you kidding? Or are you just young? COD was hardly a "breakthrough".. Course ur entitled to ur opinion.
Likely young Pill. Most of them probably never had to frig around with a batch file in DOS to get a game to work. The new breed, Windows warriors. lol
Technically Wolfenstein is def. the earlest, but for me Doom really captivated me and got me started playing fps and computer games in general. Never really got into wolfenstein tbh.. levels were kinda dull and Doom was just a much more interesting concept to me. Plus the weapons were better. I love COD but I can hardly think of it as a "breakthrough". One of the most polished and well put together FPS series out there? No doubt about it! Breakthrough?? eehhhhh not so much.
wolfenstein is definately the forerunner of the fps genera. for my money quake 2 was the pinnacle of the fps game. you had a awsome single player. killer multiplayer maps, mod friendly, a minute to pick up and play and months or years you could invest mastering the quarky physics, straif jumps, double jumps, finiding every uber line on the maps for the trick jumps or the godly ones on the edge map, that one i could never get that one 3 jump trick to make it across the pit area from one of the corridors. deus ex was a brilliant game hands down one of the best mixes of rpg/stealth/fps ever made period. still my hat falls in with quake 2 just because of the accidental depth that game had with the physics, when you got a bit tired of deathmatch, or rocket arena, or runes i could load up a map and play follow the leader trying to do tricks.
Crysis was a playable benchmark, nothing of a milestone at all. Oh wait, yeah as a benchmark maybe. Sorry but the game was just not fun, nothing interesting except the graphics. I barely made myself finish Crysis, and Warhead. Doom IMO is the grandfather of FPS. It was the most popular shareware of its time, and the most known FPS.
I thought your avatar looked familiar... Yeah what was it... load bla bla bla ,8,1?? the days when vga monitors were the shiznick... Seems like a bad dream now...
Wolf 3d & Doom gave the genre its start. Quake pumped up multiplayer emphasis but Quake 2 & CTF led to the beginning of a mod craze that hasn't died out yet. Half life showed that FPS could be more than mindless shooters & the mods for half life showed that for some games the mods could be worth as much as the actual game.
That crossed my mind briefly too, but then I couldn't recall of it was a fps or not.. I don't think Crysis was milestone as such, although it did raise the bar yet again for fps genres.
