Agree, go with one of these if you dont want to put down the cash for a GTX 295.

Ati is crap and always has been crap and their drivers are crap and have always been crap too. Notice how all the bugs in games need hotfix's for ATi drivers. Crap crap crap.

I agree with Nikaya. 275/285.........and not the 2GB versions.

    All the Nvidiots aside.

4890 Atom version stock 1ghz core memory, OCs fairly easy to 1100 / 1200 and slightly outperform the 285 GTX in all games except farcry 2 and crysis, and it is very close there at 1920x1200 resolutions 4x aa dx10.

275 also a nice pick, once OCed is on pair with a stock 285, same situation as with 4890 atom versions, falls behind in all games except farcry2 and crysis.

For a lesser budget 260 216 can never go wrong, hella powerful card and now very cheap aswell, I would pick that over a 4870 really due to power reqs. For all other cards you will deffo need something more powerful then the 400W PSU.

After that 250 GTS 1gb version ( think they are only made 1gb and the old 9800gtx 512s are more expensive so makes no sense getting that ). With the 250 GTS you might be ok with the 400W PSU, borderline.

    /edit

ATi has no extreme driver issues like the fanbois try to imply, all drivers since 8.12 have been solid, the new 9.7 is awesome for me in Age of Conan, World in Conflict, Farcry 2, Dark Age of Camelot and CoD4. No issues at all, and while I do not like the CCC program ( prefer nvidias way ) it has improved and you sorta get used to it after a while. Though you can ask more here from ATi not having profiles is retarded ( yes I know you can make them youserlf but thats no excuse ).

    4870 is $ 160 and I seen a GTX275 for $199 on newegg I dont know if its still 199, but GTX260 core 216's i seen go for $160-180.

Now what people dont understand that what works for one person do not mean it will work for the next person as these cards react diffent to diffent configs.

    nvidiots?

I'm sorry but no matter what i would suggest an nvidia card to someone over an ATI card, unless there was an extremely good deal on an ATI, reason being is not that ATI cards are bad, but the drivers are absolutely horrible, you can try and deny that fact but it's a FACT there's no going around it. The drivers are bad, they need to be fixed, but i don't suspect they will be fixed for years. Yes, some people have no problems, great, that's awesome, but there's a very large amount of people who have extreme problems. Anyone saying any differently is an ATI fanboy, that is also a fact, because the only way you can actually deny the fact is to be a fanboy of something. It's like saying the world is flat, because you like flat things, flat fanboyism? doesn't make it true

    Aside from that....

Have you looked at your avatar lately nvidiot?

ATI Cards aren't factually nor directly bad.

    Yeah, they're just "different"

But jokes aside, HD4890 go for a nice price, but to you definetly need to buy a better psu for that card... 600w will do the job...

People in Sweden seem to read The Inquirer and believe what Charlie Demerjian says.

Seriously, you are telling ATI is the only way to go ?
This is Nvidia section so GTX260 and GTX275 are good answers.

If you don't want to upgrade your 400W PSU I'd suspect the Radeon 4770 or the power-efficient 9800-variants might be the way to go.

However, it's going to be a significant challenge to improve upon your GPU performance within that 400W power envelope. I'd suggest waiting with your upgrade and getting a new PSU as the first step.

Get a high-quality. high-power PSU. It'll last you along time and would allow for significant upgrade potential. I'm aiming for the Seasonic 850D myself as my next item on the list.

Cheapest upgrade would be another 9600GT. Consider 9800GT/9800GTX+/250GTS whichever fits your pocket otherwise on the higher end 260GTX/275GTX/285GTX but anywhichways don't sell your existing 9600GT cos you can use that for physics processing.

i never said ATI cards are bad, they most certainly aren't, the only thing, about the card, that i hate, is on paper it looks a lot better then nvidia cards comparatively (on paper again), but other then that, the drivers are horrible, if i could run an ATI card with nvidia drivers, that would be a done deal, but...that's not possible :p

I'm sure there's just as many people world-wide having issues with nVidia drivers as there are ATI drivers. I personally, with the exception of a recent issue, have never had a problem with drivers from either manufacturer. My recent issue was a case where I couldn't alt-tab in and out of WoW without being forced to close and restart the game....and that was with nVidia drivers (186.08 beta and 186.18WHQL drivers specifically). I never had this issue with the 185.85 drivers that I saw countless complaints about....or any of the ATI drivers. Also, I've never had ATI drivers enable a feature I was completely incapable of using (3D Stereo bull****...), which my nVidia drivers did....but I don't consider that a problem, just an annoyance caused by poorly written code. In fact, I returned an otherwise perfectly good card because I couldn't get that 1 feature to disable....regardless of how many times or what ways I tried to disable it. Now I miss my GTS250...my GTX275 actually performs worse in WoW at the settings I prefer....thanks to Blizzard for the poorly written graphics engine...

4890 and 4870 are best value here in Europe anyway. 4890 can be gotten for 170 ,competing GTX275 is about 40+ euro more, which is a huge difference.

Show me actual proof....as not all users post in forums....

Also, if you wouldn't mind, check out this thread as he appears to need help with getting SLI to work: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?p=3212433&posted=1#post3212433

I've used 9600GT...with nothing but problems....HD4850 with no problems until I fried the card....GTS250 with 3D Stereo refusing to disable....and my GTX275. I was actually happier with my HD4850, but I wouldn't trade back to it.

I would look into getting either the HD4870 1Gb or GTX260 Core 216 if I wanted to go cheap. If I wanted to spend a little more, I would get the HD4890 or GTX275. Both cards in both categories perform about equally, so get whatever best suits your budget and be happy with it
