I just updated to 186.08 but I don't see Ambient Occlusion under my "Manage 3D Settings."

I am using Windows XP. I updated by first uinstalling PhysX and Nvidia drivers from control panel and then install the new driver.

Ambient Occlusion is Vista or Win 7.

I thought ambient occlusion was implemented through DirectX 10.

    XP does not use DX10

But as the above user said it only worked under the DX9 renderer so XP shouldn't be blocked off for such a reason.
(AO can't use DX10 either as several non-DX10 titles can use the technology such as Hl2 and Mirrors Edge.)

ambient occlusion is a DX 10, DX 10.1 and DX 11 exclusive feature

How? I've got Half Life 2 and Left 4 Dead.

I just don't see how it's possible, seeing as it's a driver level option.

AO is not specific to DX 10 or higher. I've never heard that from nvidia. Only thing I have heard from them is that AO works on some games. They have a list of 22 games that AO works on.

because they have it implemented in the game itself.

In xp i saw it with nhancer but it didnt work in games although enabled..so ye if you want to force it in games that dont support ao then u need vista or win7.

the ambient occlusion tab will not show up in xp, so how will you impleament AO if it not globaly turned on.

using nhancer to force it on wont do the trick either in xp. wether the game supports it or not.

ambient occlusion codes r much easier to write in shader model 4 then shader model 3, just like hdr. thats why nvidia wont waste its intelectual power to create a driver that brings AO to xp.

I have xp home and w7 on my pc, and I still find my self using xp more. As good and solid w7 is, it is an excellent OS, xp gets the job done quicker.

The XP vs Vista: Performance bull**** is just that. I've run XP and Vista both on my current system and Vista was smoother and more responsive. I guess it just depends on the person...

I assume he's using a 32 bit os with 6gb ram. its not about needing vista, i dont think he needs a i7 920 either of you look at it that way. but why settle for less when you can have more? and if he's compaining about the lack of AO i guess he does need vista after all :)
