I am toying with the idea of getting an Nvidia 285 and my current PC has a 550 power supply. The Nvidia site says this is the minimum power requirement. However, I have seen a few arguments on here with people saying you need more power. Do you think I need more power and will need to upgrade or do you think I will be fine? Any experts care to give an opinion? Thanks
I just today ordered a GTX 285 and have a 8800GT 512Mb that I will use a PhysX card and a Q6600@ 3.4Ghz. All this and some other stuff will run great on my Corsair HX 520W I think so you should be all set if your PSU is not some crap their is
True but I do not want to blow up my PC, I read somewhere that you can damage the whole PC if you have an inadequate supply. I guess I will just do some research and buy a new power supply to be safe.
550W is enough. i test 2X285 SLI on I7 965+MSI X58 PLATNIUM SLI+triple channel, single card can get 330.4W, two cards can get 522.8W. the result of my test is not same as suggestion of manufactor, don't worry about it.:nerd:
not if its generic it wont...or might not. np taking that risk. @op get yourself a good thermaltake/antec/corsair with 4 rails ideally 750w and then power worries are over n done with. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152506 heres a good one.
If you can run the 8800GTX with no flaws, the 285 will be fine. The power consuption between the two of these cards is near identical.
Thanks for the comments. I bought a Tagan PipeRock TG800-BZ 800w Modular BZ Series PSU http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-023-TG&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= Hopefully that will do the trick.
For less than that you can pickup a corsair tx 850w, it's in a different class to the tagan.. It will be more than enough, bought the same Power supply to power my new EVGA 295GTX card... Looks like my PS will arrive Wednesday and my 295GTX will arrive Thursday, Will give me the opportunity to install the PS on my Rig, and then Thursday I can retire my 4870 512Mb and install my shiney new 295GTX....Going to be a great week.....
Well you have to take into account the RAM, CPU, HDDs, CD drives. And a CPU to have 285 SLI would have to be pretty beefy, hell, even one 285 would have to have a hefty CPU. as for PSU's, Mine is pretty nice, it was $65 and it has 80a's on 4x12v, and it's 650W continuous. And its got a 120mm Blue LED fan, and the cables have sleeves on them. It has plenty of connectors, believe me, i had 3 DVD drives(one sata), 3 sata HDDs, and a TT fan controller. It only has one 8pin PCI-e plug though, and its a 6+2pin. has an 8pin CPU plug, 20+4 mobo plug. All that good stuff. AND it was $65.. God i love Rosewill.
