Thanks... I'm using Windows XP SP3 at the moment and haven't install the new drivers in Vista SP2 beta (I'm dual-booting) but that would explain the differenct version numbers.

I went ahead and installed the new display drivers only and now my version numbers are:

    Driver Packaging Version 8.561-081201a1-072271C-ATI
    Catalyst® Version 08.12
    Provider ATI Technologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 6.14.10.6891
    2D Driver File Path System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Video/{E67CD597-F611-49DC-B9E1-3006D25D7EBD}/0000
    Direct3D Version 6.14.10.0630
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.8304
    Catalyst® Control Center Version 2008.1201.1504.27008
    AIW/VIVO WDM Driver Version 6.14.10.6238
AIW/VIVO WDM SP Driver Version 6.14.10.6238

Weird that the Driver Packaging Version number seems older than the betas I had installed before though.

I have Vista 64 and a single 4870. Still using 8.10. Would 8.11 be an improvement? I can already tell 8.12 is a waste of time..........

BS...driver sweaper cleans out the stuff left behind so windows basically doesn't have any clue there was any video installed. So what you're saying is that a clean windows install is ****ed too since it has no ATI software leftovers.

Man...stop calling people retards and ****. Listen, it doesn't work because the driver is not working properly on THEIR SYSTEM! Many people use 8.11 fine in crossfire but 8.12 refuses to. Nothing has changed, no hardware OR software changes other than ATI drivers. It's damn obvious it's the drivers NOT them. It should just work. We aren't software engineers and I'm betting you're not either so we cannot explain how it just doesn't function like it should.

Please stop bashing people for posting ligitimate complaints and experiences.

Well. I read this entire post..we all have so many diff. configurations, its tuff to say what the common denominator is. I installed 8.12 and i removed 8.11 with driver cleaner and everything works fine. I havent done any benchs, but left 4 dead runs fine. I checked the driver version and they all match the latest builds. No problems here...yet.

Works great, installs great, iq great, xfire works great, Thanks ATI!
Maybe people who use all kinds of unnecessairy exotic programs to remove socalled harmfull leftovers of old drivers and whine afterwards that it doesnt work anymore and that they are going to buy a Nvidia card tomorrow, should not only say it but actually do it too!
That way threads like this won't be spammed anymore by whining noobs and all bad publicity caused by ignorance will come to an end.
Just uninstall in the windows software uninstall utility, reboot, install new drivers, reboot, and you're good to go.
Works every time and you know why? Because it's designed to do that!

Sometimes there are issues and it is nothing the end user is doing wrong. I have had this happen to me recently with the 8.10 drivers.

It's funny that you call everyone a noob for having a problem that is ATI's fault. If it were isolated I'd say ok maybe, but it's too many people with differing hardware that just flat out can't use 8.12. Period. There's no discussion necessary, it doesn't work. That's indeed a problem. We're all happy it works for you, but you're offering no solution and just worshiping ATi. Give us all a break.

There are people also saying that a clean install of windows also doesn't allow 8.12 to function properly but everything previous works fine. You can't get any simpler than that. It's not old driver remnants, not driver cleaner/sweeper despite what the know nothings say, it's not old BIOS drivers etc because they even use the latest ones. It is a driver issue in 8.12 for some configurations and nothing more than that.

    Oh the irony.

Thanks for the laugh, there is something wrong with these drivers. Period. I guess I just get lucky with every other driver I install working correctly? Yeah, that must be it because I'm a stupid ignorant noob.

I do agree with you, but the tone of this thread has taken a nose dive wouldn't you agree? I just find it unsatisfactory to say the least, that many people would call another a noob for a driver not functioning on a clean system. There was another thread where someone has a fresh install of windows with latest updates etc. 8.12 wouldn't work when installed. They had to install 8.11 and then install 8.12 over the top. That is not right. No driver should need any previous version installed to achieve proper functionality. It's pretty sad to think about the fact that because someone got crossfire or the driver in general to work that everyone else is an idiot because it doesn't work for them. Like every piece of software is infallible or something.

There's something to be said when you have a working system using 8.11 and then 8.12 just breaks functionality of their x2 or crossfire card(s). They have to revert to 8.11 to get anything working. Then that same user can go back to 8.8/8.9/8.10 and still have working drivers. Yet 8.12 fails to work. Still people refuse to believe ATI made an error somewhere, somehow. I wish every driver could be perfect, but they are not. The only drivers I think I've never had a problem with was from Intel, their chipset drivers just seem to work. Pretty much everything else added on has its share of glitches and bugs along the way.

I just got done installing the 8.12’s on a clean Vista 64/Beta SP2 install and they are working fine.

I haven’t had any problems with 8.12 Beta RC3’s, 8.11 or the 8.10’s either, all of which were installed on a fresh OS.

i went from 8.11 to 8.12 rc3 , uninstalled first with ati ,no driver cleaner after(never used it)... didnt have any problems in any games and improvements in many.
i then installed official 8.12 straight over previous(no uninstall nothing). i still dont have a problem. actually ive never had problem with ati drivers or ccc

it appears that these work for some and not others

crossfire works fine for me i still have the logo option.
farcry2 noticable improvement with aa on
world at war definate improvement with aa on

Just about every time there’s a new driver from Nvidia or ATI I’ll usually do a full reformat with all the latest drivers for my hardware along with the latest Windows updates and DirectX.

These are two strictly “gaming” machines so if I have to wipe the drives it doesn’t matter.
