They usually laser cut any extra pipelines on lower end cards, preventing from what you are saying. The last time I heard of being able to open up pipelines was in the Nvidia 6xxxx series of cards. It could also be done with the x850 pro (Made by ATI version) by changing a hex value to unlock additional shaders. Besides that, it is impossible to do this on recent cards.

dp100! He's not unlocking shaders. He's talking about sharders.

But I think it's still not possible, though, elecg2. You'll probably brick your card by doing so.

NVIDIA learned from there 6800 series that simply disabling the extra Pipelines on low-end and mid-end cards wasn't enough to protect there high-end cards in the market.

So after the 6800Vanilla was being unlocked from 12 Pipelines to 16 (I think that's right?) they changed there tactics to physically laser cutting the die to sever the extra Pipeline connections so that they could not be enabled.

Of course today NVIDIA have moved to a Unified Shader, and the Pipelines have become Processing Cores. Many hundreds of them.

Sucks for us consumers. Intel did the same thing with the early Allendale samples of the E6300 and E6400. Instead of offering the chips with 4MB L2 cache they laser-cut 2MB from its L2 Cache making it inaccessible to the rest of the processor. Eventually they did remove the 4MB entirely and replace it with a native 2MB L2 Cache for Cost reasons. Which is why some users of the earlier samples call them Conroe-Allendales as they are basically Conroes with some cache inaccessible.

To answer the OPs question; yes, it's possible to flash it with the SSC bios, but if your card can't take such a high clock, it will be foolish to attempt it. Much better to just set the clocks in RivaTuner...

I'd like to inquire further about how you "unlocked" some inexisting shaders on your 8800GTS 640 though? ;)

More sharders = extra solar bean/nuck power.

I remember enabling the 4 pixel pipelines on my old 6800NU, alas, they were broken.

Anyway, outside of weird cases where certain card makers appera to be software modding their cards to sell them as lower models, it is not possible to "unlock" shaders nowdays, especially on the 8800GTS.
