I just picked up a cheapie $500 rig at Best Buy. It actually has ok stats (5000 x2, 3 GB Ram, etc) but I was looking for a decent card to replace the crappy built in one.

I have a 6600GT in another machine that I can use in a pinch, but whats the best for around $100 these days?

    Thanks!

Try to get like 50-60 more bucks and get 9600GT. If you really can't afford that go for 8600GT or try finding some used 7900GTX etc.

If it were my money, I'd probably go with this card [if you don't take AIONs advice and save a bit more for a 9600]

I'd stay away from the 8600GT if if were me, no offense Brian. It's just not a good gaming card. look up the Guru3d review on them. an 8600GTS would be the minimum I would recommend. Here's one for less than the GT:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814141055
the core clock is much higher and having 256MB ram on a low end card doesn't really affect anything since the settings will be low enough not to use it all anyway.
    8600GTS - decent i guess
8600gt - slow and not worth extra money just for 512MB ram

I'd still try to save an extra $50 though for a 9600GT. Its more than twice as fast as the 8600s.

Assuming $100 = £50, there are lots of 7600GT on eBay for your price bracket.

Some people don't like relying on rebates first of all.
Second of all, maybe in the back of his mind, even though he said 100 dollars he was really hoping for something less then that.
Try and be helpful and give him what he requests instead of calling people tools.

Depends on where you live. In US, Newegg, you can get a 3650, or 8600GT. I'd say they are your best bet. You can look for previous generation high ends, like x1950, x1900, x1800, 7900, 7800, or even go back to the x800, and 6800s. If you could find them, really skip the 8600. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the 8600.

For under $100 this might be the best choice. It appears to have a better heatsink than the standard one as well.

But I would recommend saving up and getting this instead:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814134040

Why? Because a 9600GT is literally twice as powerful as an 8600GT.

all of you are crazy ddr2 vs ddr3 on a video card doesnt matter with a 8600gt here get this ive bought two of them and both play crysis exceptionally well with everything on medium at 1280 by 1024 and they run cold all thetime. its 512 ddr2 but 512 of ddr2 is good enough to run crysis and any game out there.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125083&Tpk=gigabyte

best card hands down for around 100 bucks i own two of them in two seperate machine one with a amd 4000 x2 and one with a amd x2 6000 bothrun crysis at medium settings no problem and mostly any other games on high. trust me im the only one who will be able to help you with this problem.....:nerd:

The 8600 series is complete trash, this has been known for over 6 months now, hence why it was pulled out of circulation quickly.

The 7900GT is actually faster than all 8600 series cards (main reason why they didn't make it) The 128bit memory interface on the 8600 series brought them back down to 6 Series technology while the 7900GT was running a 256bit memory interface (same as the G92 cards now)

Look for either a 7900/7950GT or a X1900/1950XT, these are your best cards for under $100.

I hope this was a joke
