    Hi,

Since a month or two ago I've started having issues with my computer, it would freeze right as I was playing a game. This happened every 2 hours or so, so I could live with it, but it started getting worse. There even was a moment I couldn't start up any game or it would reboot.

My graphics card back then was an ATI Radeon 9800 SE, overclocked using Omega Drivers. I thought that card was the problem and switched it with an old ATI Rage Fury Pro 32MB (lol). Problems vanished and I could normally work on my computer, however not play games (No freezes or reboots, just try playing a game with a graphics card like that ;))

I went looking for a new graphics card and my eye, being a budget gamer, fell on the Nvidia 7600 GS. I bought it for not too much and installed it. Worked fine untill I installed the drivers (the newest, from the website). The random reboots and freezes started coming back and I have no clue what it is. The graphics card felt pretty hot but the Nvidia control panel told me it was 73 degrees celsius, which fell in the green area.

I hope anyone has a clue what this might be. Enclosed is my Dxdiag.

I agree, it does sound like a PSU problem. Have a look in your case at the PSU label and tell us what it says. You want the Wattage rating and more importantly the Amp rating. You should see the Watts in the name of the PSU and the Amps will be in a small table, you want the +12V one(s), there may be more than one.

If it turns out your PSU is sufficient (since the 7600GS doesn't need much power) then it may be a driver issue. Since you went from ATi to NVIDIA i suggest you use Driver Cleaner and reinstall the video card drivers. Read the instructions first so you know what you're doing, it isn't complicated but you should read them before you use it.

could be temperature too. open your case, and dust out ALL the nasty dust, clogging the cpu heatsink/fan, and gpu heatsink fan. As well as case fans. Make sure all fans are spinning properly, and there is enough airflow.

Better yet, after cleaning, leave the case open and play the game, see if you still get crashes. If yes, then its not the temp.

question, after you bought the 7600 and installed drivers, did the reboot only occur when trying to play a game? Or even on idle?

I've cleaned all the dust and my pc has been running with the case open, so I'm quite sure temperature isn't the problem.

The reboot only occured when playing a game, but the pc froze too when I was watching a vid on youtube.

I'll check up the wattages later, thanks for the useful info already.

A Multimeter will give you more accurate readings but it isn't necessary. If your case is open then all you have to do is look at the PSU label, it will literally take 2 seconds.

The wattage ratings and the actual voltage output the thing is giving his system are 2 different things entirely.

Yes but it's a start, and not everyone has a multimeter handy.

I used Driver Cleaner and putted the 7600 back in, but the same problems stayed. I read the stuff on my PSU, it says 12 A under +12 V.

It looks like you need a new PSU, 12 amps on the 12v rail is really low. Are you sure there is just one +12v number on there, is there 12v1 and 12v2 for example?

If not then 12 Amps really won't be enough, and that's why you're crashing and rebooting in games. You could probably pick up a cheap PSU that will power a 7600GS fine. That said, if you plan on upgrading say in 6 months or even a years time, then a decent PSU that will last would probably be a good idea.

Yep, 12 amps on the 12V is really not much. Maybe enough for a old pentium III pc, but not for an Athlon XP 2700+ and a radeon 9800 class or geforce 7600 class videocard. For a pc with a Geforce 7600GS/GT you need a power supply with at least 18/19 amps on the 12V rails.

    Good luck!

    Yeah, its PSU issue.

I had PSU problem cuz of the amps is really low on +12v. So I bought new case+psu which is 28 amps on +12v. The problem's gone.

U said u had ATI Radeon 9800 SE which uses more volt from power supply so it cannot supply enough power to the graphic card. U also said u tried the ATI Rage Fury Pro 32mb which uses low volt and ur power supply can supply the power to it enough, that's why ur computer didn't reboot with ur 32mb graphic card.

    I would recommend u to buy a 20+ amps on +12v.

    Enjoy,
    ExoriaX

Thanks for the responses, it's clear now! My father works at a company specialized in Power supplies so I'll have a new one soon. One more question though, how come my old graphics card used to work fine?

Your older card requires less power (wattage and amperage). Thus, your system worked fine at the time or with it in.

BTW, that's pretty cool that your dad works for a company specialized in power supplies. :)

Yep, as ExoriaX and SolidBladez said, your other card wouldn't need anything like the power needs of those other cards, so your PSU could handle it.

Each card has its own power requirements, generally, the better the video card the more power it needs, so in turn you need a better power supply.

What kind of power supplies does the company your dad works for make? Are they PC power supplies? Maybe you can get us all discounts :p

Sounds like a driver issue to me...try going back to your old drivers and run a driver cleaning program in the process ....btw, your new 7600GS (27W) uses less power than your old 9800 (42W)...and the 12v capability of your power supply really shouldn't be an issue in this case since both cards get all their power thru the AGP slot which uses mainly the 3.3v and 5v sources and can only provide 1a of 12v power.

He didn't have old drivers, he said it work until he installed the drivers. Now you're trying to say a PSU with 12 amps is good enough for a 7600GS? Come off it man, i was actually starting to think you might be right about PSU's, but 12 amps for a 7600GS to run stable and reliably? No chance. Why is it that companies always recommend amps on the 12v rail for AGP cards?

Even if what you say about the AGP slot is true, do you think a PSU with 12 amps on the 12v rail is going to have any more amps on the other rails?

    It's the PSU.

He had to have had old drivers in order for it to work at all. I'm not here to go around in circles with you yet again...I'm trying to help the OP and I feel that this is probably a software issue, and definately not a PSU issue from what he has told us. If you don't believe what I say about the AGP slot then go educate yourself before you make a fool of yourself any further.

If the OP wants to give us his full system specs including any information about the PSU that he can find, then I'll comment on that.
