Hi all, I'm a new here. I wanna talk about global illumination in Stalker. And I hope I’ll get clue and information about gi lightning technology. Please keep staying on topic. I don’t want this thread is going to nowhere. Thanks. OK, let me start first.

    Static Lighting
plain texture, NO Parallax Mapping, DX8 mode
    very great frame rate
    [IMG]
That was 1280x1024 Maximum Quality in game preset option and Static Lightning

    Full Dynamic Lighting
    [IMG]
same option but with Full Dynamic Lightning mode

Full Dynamic Lighting + Global Illumination
    [IMG]
somehow it's too bright and has very bad performance with my X1950Pro
    r2_gi on
    r2_ls_bloom_fast off

Full Dynamic Lighting + Global Illumination + Bloom
    [IMG]
can G80/R600 do this @ minimum 30fps, holly mother!?
    r2_gi on
    r2_ls_bloom_fast on

    try this

    r2_gloss_factor 1.5 <- Amount of specular shininess aplied - 0 to 10
    (Super shiny to very dull)

    r2_allow_r1_lights on

    r2_gi on

    8800GTX is just nice, indeed :D ...

but, why GI killed the frame rate too much?

static lighting looks rough, cant imagine myself playing it with SL even with the frame rate boost, runs good on my rig with DL.

Yes, the game loose all it's charm with Static lighting, I have DL on and I got used to some slowdowns sometimes, but man, the lighting is so great that I don't really care about FPS drops, I just want to stop the stuttering when entering new zones...

Look, the game really not look so bad on my rig <-- P4 single core, that's pure satan!! :p

yeh good pics, looks like you have medium or low texture res on tho? you can def tell the difference between medium and high.

Don't use R1 lights. Some people think they look good, but they're unrealistic and horrid.

Global illumination bounces certain lights like flashlights, so that it can light it's surroundings more realistically. However in this game it's not very good. To get good performance try lowering the amount of photons the global illumination function uses, I find 8 gives me very acceptable performance.

normal full dynamic lighting looks the best , static looks poor and the other 2 are really over done

Between medium and highest, in the sliding bar. ( I will do FPS test between my current textures and the highest. )

EDIT: Nah, textures to highest gives me too much Stuttering.. too much for my rig :p

you dont have enough video ram to run Stalker with full dynamic lighting unfortunately mate , sometimes when playing this game my vram usage is over 480mb!!!! 256 cards just cant cut it , no matter how fast they are

look at my post here http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=219684&page=3 and thats about the minimum vram usage

Yeah, you'll notice stuttering with 256mb cards when the computer loads textures on and off system memory to be allocated to video memory, might be time for an upgrade, or a swap to a 512mb x1900xt. Not the most efficiently coded game mind you.

    I noticed a pretty big performance jump when I swapped a 128mb 6800 to a 256mb one.

Guys, seriously add -noprefetch after the command line, the game is really loading fast and I noticed less stuttering!! try it !

(not for FPS, only reducing stuttering, which I wanted)

global illumination is the most realistic kind of lighting availabe I'd say. Think about it, there aren't any completely black areas when there is a light source close by. Light gets reflected around and hits most places a little bit. It doesn't look as dramatic though, so it depends on what effect you are going for i guess.
