I don't think it is because I also get horrible performance especially when there is lots of dynamic lighting going on.

Honestly it sounds like a software issues. I can play at max settings Minus AA and AF at full and I get 30-40FPS constant. 20FPS near a lot of guys. AND I use a custom config file as well.

Try doing some serious spring cleaning. It might help more that you realize.

I find that a bit hard to believe. Although I use high AA and AF, the differential in the power of our systems should dictate higher FPS on my end. My OS build is a few weeks old and I use this rig for only one thing, gaming. Hence, absolutely no crap on it whatsoever.

However, I'm waiting for Koroush over at Tweakguides to release his recommendations. "Massaging" certain settings can make all the difference. :)

yeah and 90% of the hit is in the lighting,

Tho i found setting view distance to 2 notches above minimum and lighting distance to the same with Full dynamic lighting and everything elts maxed (AA off of course) i get easily usable view distance even when sniping, without *alot* of noticeable draw that nets me a avg of 50/60 fps in the open, and 35/40 in bases/towns/outposts.

Otherwise my fps can "crash" in towns to sub 20's and even in the open it can be a avg of only 25/30.

needless to say i cant wait for koroush's guide

Um you only need more then 256MB of RAM at high resolutions. I am running at 1280x1024.

I've been Googling for a while and I can't find where I saw someone used a diagnostic that showed that this game can use over 700MB of video memory. Maybe I was drunk, I highly doubt it. :)

LOL no it wont. Its not just my card the 8800GTX's with the 768MB of video memory are getting complete crap FPS too.

I'm afraid Classic Satch is correct:
    Source: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/stalker_mainstream_3d_performance/page5.asp

Keep in mind that this test also fails to display minimum fps, and only has average fps taken into account. It is only logical to assume that the overall smoothness of the game is much greater with a 512mb+ card, since it's highly likely that, with the fps difference being as huge as it is, there was a lot of memory trashing with the 256 mb cards --> Huge stutter.

Like I said earlier too I am only playing at 1280x1024 so it doesnt matter to me. You only use that much when you are at high ress. And back to what I came here for.

I have to sneak into a sarcophagus now and I have no clue what to do. Do I leave that underground base I am in or what? I have no way point telling me which way to go.

Now, look at the X1900XT. The percentage difference between 54 fps and 59.4 fps is ~9.1%. That's a lot. Increasing the level of AA will make the difference even greater. Face it: STALKER is a video memory -hungry game, and that is *probably* the reason why you're getting worse performance than people with supposedly slower cards, that have more Vram. In any case, I don't want to rub it it. ;)

They should have included dual core vs single core processors.

Shame it dosent have a built in timedemo.

They should really come as standard these days.

Shame you didnt actually read my post huh? Notice I said the 8800GTX is also getting ****ty FPS. And sorry to say at 1280x1024 NOTHING single will beat my card. Not even a 7950GX2 at 1280x1024. And that chart says a X1900XT? That isnt even in my 8800GTS's league. That chart isnt even accurate because it doesnt have any of the newest models out. You're comparing it to a 7900GT which has been out for nearly if not a year now.

Here are some stats for you , i only played the game for 5 mins while monitoring but i took a few screenies to illustrate just how much memory Stalker needs and it might show why you guys with 360mb cards are struggling , look at th monitor at the top , 1.5 gig of ram and 377mb of video ram used and thats only at 1024x768 no AA settings all ramped except gras and view distance about 80% , i expect the vid mem usage would go up in firefights

yet with static lighting I get 200 FPS nearly always. Hmm so dynamic lighting uses up THAT much vmemory? I smell a glitch here. Still doesnt explain the ****ty 8800GTX performance as well.

I'm not comparing an X1900XT to a 7900GT... The 7900 just happened to be there because there was a 256mb version and a 512mb version of it :D. I was merely stating that having more Vram on your GPU will help a lot in STALKER, regardless of your resolution, as seen in that chart.

Also, I'm not trying to imply that an X1900XT beats out your card, but what I am saying is that the 8800GTS 640mb will definitely beat out your card by a fair percentage because of its Vram advantage. The 8800GTS 320mb's are clocked higher as well, correct?

the 320mb are clocked higher? I have no clue. Mine is superclocked and I have it at 625/2000 constantly I dont know the 640mb versions.

mmmm never thought of checking it in static , ram usage 1182mb vid ram usage peaked at 165mb and my fps up to and including 300!!! much better than the 35-50 i get on full dynamic,...............quite a differance

unfortunately i think the game looses alot of its ambiance in static

lol theres no way it takes up over 1GB of RAM my friend has the game and is only on 1GB of RAM and it runs perfectly fine. And I sense a bug with dynamic lighting.
