I currently have the ATI x850xt PE. I was wondering since I want to play some games that require shader 3.0 it was worth upgrading from my current x850xt pe to ati x1950xtx 512mb?

My mobo only supports one pci-e. I can't run SLI.

    Thanks in advance.

    I'm running windows xp home.

Probably not considering the asking price of an XTX and the fact you'll likely want to upgrade it to a next-generation card in a year or so. However the much more affordable X1900/X1950 XT 256 are quite faster than your card and would hold you over nicely.

ive seen the x1800xtx for $360 over at best buy. how much does the X1900/X1950 XT 256 go for?

my power supply is only to 450w i believe. so i cant get any monstor cards.

No, the XTX is overpriced in the DX10 landscape. If you really want to upgrade before the DX10 price war begins, and don't mind a DX9 card. I would go for the X1950pro512 or the X1950XT256. ATI as the best price/speed-IQ ratio for higher DX9 cards. Those cards should not be more than about US$200.

Personnally. I would wait a little bit more and get a DX10 card. They seem to be in your budget anyway since you are looking at $360 cards, or an XTX. The DX10 cards out right now are not bad, it's just that the market isn't mature (no significant price drops yet, no full DX10 lines) and that you don't really need them now (no DX10 games). Wait for the DX10 games, and then decide what is worth getting then.

Of course, if you don't want to wait for the DX10 games to upgrade. You're back to getting a 8600 or a 8800... or even a X1950 is you don't care for DX10.

Well, the X1600 isn't expensive, and it could be okay for the time being, unless you want a DX10 ATi card, then I'd go for the X1950Pro until the ATi DX10 market matures a wee bit.

    thanks for your guys help.

right now i have these choices, which you think will be my best choice...
I'm looking for some good improvment over my x850xt pe and hopefully good performance on R6 Vegas. can someone rate them from first through last from performance wise. and how much of performance am i looking to see. Reason for upgrading cause I need shader 3.0 to play R6 Vegas. And does 512mb ddr make a big diffrence compared to 256mb ddr?

    BFG - GeForce 7950 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 - $309
    ATI RADEON X1950 PRO 256MB $250
VisionTek - RADEON X1650 Pro 512MB DDR Graphics Card $170

I play BF2142 (the most), COD2, CS:S NFS: Carbon and plan on playing R6 Vegas. all games played on 1024x768. I don't see any reason going any higher...

I was reading in UBI's forum for R6V and folks are having problems running on 8800's.

They go for about $300 and they are faster than the X1800XTX which was a good card but is already aging. The advent of the 1900 series cut short the 1800 series' career by providing more power for less money. The most common card in the XT series is now the 1950 but if you can find a 1900 you may opt to buy it even it's usually slightly more expensive (small difference maybe $20) because it's more reliable especially if you plan to OC it. If you don't plan on overclocking your card then the 1950 is an excellent choice. Performance differences between the 1900 XT and the 1950 XT are negligible, they are very similar to one another, they even look the same. The 1950 Pro is still faster than your present card but it's crippled somewhat compared to the XT's

i m wondering why PSUs are so costly there? here we call it SMPS ( Switched-mode power supply )...and price of it for 400 or 550 w ( any of them u want ) is $10-15 only! with warranty ofcource!

P.S. i m happy with my X800XT this time...it can run all games with medium & full details...( medium details for games which came from 2006 ) yeah thts true tht 2 games r thr which needs shader model 3...but i dont wanna change my card for these 2 games.....i can play supreme commander at 30 FPS avarage on default settings ( havent looked at settings yet...its created default by game when i started it ) i will wait for few months until DX10 cards' price go down.

I am against jumping on DX10 bandwagon just yet. In a year sure, but not before there is any game out that actually uses DX10. Dont we remember what happened with DX8 cards and lots of those unused features (Ati Truform etc) and again with DX9 (DX9, SM2.0a, SM2.0b, DX9c SM3.0)..

I would rather wait until DX10a is out along with a few games showing real DX10 performance. Until then an affordable DX9c card with best bang for buck should do just fine.

Thing is.. there is no real standard for determining peak power and those ratings are very often overstated. Thats why people stick to known famous brands who have been producing quality PSU.

Many cheap PSUs are rated on their peak power, meaning they can hit 500W for like 2 seconds (and then blow out) while max power they can constantly deliver is much lower.

See if you can find a 400W Enermax, Antec, Hiper or Thermaltake psu for 15$ :p

make sure you check the 12V amp rating, you need at least 30 to run a high end card with stability. Even a 8800gtx can run with 30 Amps on 12V lines. If you want an upgrade, look at the x1950xt 256 at newegg. It's only 199 after mail in rebate, so that's pretty cheap for that kind of performance.

Yes, it is most worth the investment, especially if you have a large monitor.
