I was wondering what is the best card that has a minimun 250 W requirement? This isnt for upgrading or anything, I just want to know. So please dont ask me to upgrade to a 7900GTX with 650 PSU, just answer my question
If its a decent PSU, probably a 7600gs. I saw a recent chart somewhere that compared graphics cards power consumption and the 7600/7900 series cards were lower than all other comparable cards in their range.
I remember reading somewhere that a 7300gs needs a 450 W PSU so im not too sure about that.. my PSU is a cheap HP one afaik.
is very difucult. PSU no only depend by GPU card. CPU, nº optical drivers, nº HHD... for example, a high-end card, 6800GT or 7800GTX can need in load about 230W-250W only for a card. For my 7600GT for example, in full load she need about 200W. If you have medium system and a 7800GTX you'll need a min of 250W (for GPU) + other 150-200W (for CPU, RAM, HDDs...) 7300GS can consume about 150-170W in full load. 350W can be enought
Well, your PSU is a generic HP.. 250W isn't exactly powerful and I cannot even imagine what the amps on the 12V are going to be. I would suggest upgrading your PSU first, I'm sure there is very little that will run on your PSU. Sense your AGP that just limits your options even further as AGP cards need to draw more from the PSU. I guess a 7600GS is the most efficent graphics card to date but your PSU would reallly struggle and probably die after a few months.
Actually a 6600 GT would be fine on a 250 W PSU. On my other computer, i have a 250 W PSU, and i use a 6600 GT 128 mb and its fine. But Yeah id seriously say you should upgrade to at least 350 W.
Yeah i know that, a 6600 GT requires at least 350 W, but ive had my 6600 GT for a year and a half with only a 250 W Dell Powersupply and its been fine . Maybe i just got lucky wit my card then?? idk
Heres a review comparing power consumption between various cards: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/power-noise.html
I wouldn't try it. My friends Compaq system right now is getting power errors from Nvidia Sentinal, which like a virus, pops up every second. He has to use windows from VGA mode so there wouldn't be popups until he gets a better power supply. Upgrade to at least 450. With my current system, im still hitting the wall with my voltage with 430 watts, and that isn't even a lot.
Think what you all wanna think about PSU's, When i noticed the 750W (bright, blink, bright) PSU I bought a while ago for around 40 euro's. It had a peak capacity of 750 and was really a 250W.... So 4xSata 2x raid-0 Dual core 4400+ (+little oc) 2 extra fans audigy 2 zs, Nvidia 7900GTX 512 on a A8N32-SLI with 4x 1GB guess what ? .... it worked .... until ..... i placed my second GTX in there... wtf what is that smell, FUX.... hmmmm re-wire .... weird ... power back on .... BooOO00OOooM !!!! I **** you not, i'm talking about a flash/flame the reached a 30cm -+ (imagine what thats like when you have your nose stock up the ATX looking for human error. I'm not scared easily, but i ****ted 2 bricks knowing it almost cost me an eye, the other brick came while tearing a workstation to do some damage control on my own hardware (READ: FLAME/Explosion) Which was 0 yay. That saved the windows from the clown shop who sold me that PSU-o-Crappo
I ran an xp3200+ cpu/2 optical drives/1 hdd/audigy 24-bit/and a 6600gt on an emachines 300w psu for about a year till I upgraded to my current system about 6 months ago. Never had a problem. The psu had 15a on the 12v rail though.
Right now Im looking at a x1600 ..... The article said it takes up 54 W at 3D Peak. So Im assuming a 250 W PSU is alright?
