Which NVidia AGP card [£100]? -
11-11-2006, 14:51
| posts: 41 | Location: UK | User is Offline
I am looking to upgrade, my FX5200 is getting a bit tired!
I am looking to spend around £100[UK] or a tad more and usually buy from Microdirect. They have quite limited choice as everything seems to be PCI-E.
I mostly play BFV/BF2 and the POE/POE2 mods and do some video editing.
So, of the two that seem to fit my budget, which is the better card?:
XFX GeForce 7300GT 256MB, DDR2, VGA + DVI Retail
BFG GeForce 7600GS OC 512MB DDR2 AGP 8x Dual DVI
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/product...x?GroupID=1263
Is it worth paying an extra bit for the BFG? Are BFG rubbish/good, I really am out of the loop on this one, or are there any other cards that folks recommend for around £100?
Spoton is also a possibility to buy from:
http://www.spotonuk.com/shop~Cat~Vid...hics+Cards.htm
Thanks all.

The 7600 is a great value for cash card. If you can afford it, though, you should seriously consider the 7600GT as it is a far cry from the GS. You should not even consider anything with a 7300 prefix.

False. The 7300GT DDR3 is a very fast card for the money. In fact, its a great card to pit against the 7600GT.

Whatever you can afford in the 7 series will crush anything your 5200 ever even thought of putting out. There will be no comparison.

i would agree avoid the 73xx, have a look here for more AGP choice and slightly cheaper prices
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...=452&OrderBy=4
they have a lot more choice and are very good, personally used them a couple of times as their prices seem to beat a lot of other sites
I would recommend looking at fleabay. Thats where I picked up a 6800gs for only 45 quid a real bargain and worth at least twice that

So so true
look at these benchmarks
http://www.trustedreviews.com/articl...ge=7225&head=0
The 7300 gt is probably the best value performer out there. it blows most 6800 out the the waters, and thats saying something.
If you cant spare a bob or two more, get a good ddr3 7300gt and you'll have an excellent bf2 experience. Dont go for the biggest and baddest automatically.

that's weird
so 7300 DDR3 is faster than the 7600 DDR2?
Why?
Just because of the DDR3?

In a lot of cases, yes the 7300GT DDR3 will be faster than the 7600 GS DDR2. The difference will close at higher resolutions, but the 7300GT DDR3 will be faster in almost every case.

I have a BFG card and they are a good brand, however i think eVGA are better. They allow you to overclock the card without voiding the warranty, as well as changing the cooler if you wish. I believe the European warranty differs from the US warranty, but i am sure it still covers overclocking, as long as there is no physical damage caused as a result.
I see you have a socket A CPU, otherwise i would of recommended you upgrade your motherboard and get a PCI-e video card. If at all possible, save up another £100 and get an Athlon 64 939 3700 (OEM) and something like an Asus A8N-SLI SE, that would cost just over £100 i think. You could even go for a cheaper Athlon 64 3000 and upgrade it later. I think this way your PC would last at least 18 months and probably more. The reason i say this is because DX 10 is here, Vista and DX 10 games will soon follow and i seriously doubt there will be reasonably price DX 10 AGP cards if at all.
You could probably go down the AM2 route for the same price as 939, however this will require DDR2 RAM which will cost even more. Besides, from all the reviews i have seen DDR2 and AM2 doesn't offer a great performance boost compared to 939, that being said i am sure this will change in time.

there are no 7300GT DDR3 models for AGP yet... Morlock's best option is either a 7600GS or a 7600GT.

Thats what I thought to but here it is -
http://www.beast-pc.com/pd_256mb_xfx_7300gt.cfm
It has the DDR2 memory though.
Any of those cards that Willy Boy linked to should be a huge improvement over the 5200.
I can't believe Morlock was even able to play BF2 on a 5200.

The GT is MUCH faster. Even than the DDR2 256MB 7600GS. An overclocked 7600GT rivals 7800GS and beats them in most cases.
Except for the uber rare Gainward 7800GS+, the 7600GT is really the best card you can get for AGP.
