Oblivion crash to desktop issues -

Ok, I'm unsure as to what is causeing this problem for me, so I am asking you guys for some suggestions.
I had oblivion running, version 1.0 didn't crash or anything. I added the landscape LOD texture replacements etc, still great. (I have over 70 hours on xfire, completely stable)
Started playing around with a couple mods (the offical plugins). Still seemed fine. Added the mod to remove the grass tiling etc (still just texture replacements).
Suddenly I'm getting crash to desktops at seemingly random times. At first it was always when loading a new area be it walking through a door or waiting or sleeping where it releads the area. Now its happenning randomly outside while walking or somtimes shooting an arrow. Also I'm missing sounds sometimes...like i'll kill someone, and there is just silence. the sound of my sword hitting didn't play nor the death scream or anything. Yet the body makes a sound on the ground.
I've removed all the mods...still crashed. I've changed graphics drivers, and removed all overclocking. Still crashed. And I've reinstalled the game AND tried the 1.1 beta patch. It seemed fine for a while (91.28 drivers) and now its crashing again. I've checked my temps, they are all within normals i believe.
I started reading around that the crash to desktop may be an issue with the game...i just feel like there has to be something i can do since it wasn't crashing on me before and I haven't changed hardware.
Anyone have any ideas or can confirm odd crashes to desktop?

CTD's in Oblivion are more often than not caused by HDR, or by too high gpu clocks / temperature. Try disabling HDR and seeing if you still get the crashes, I don't think there's a way to fix it or a workaround yet.
The sound issue is because of the ancient soundcard we are both using, the only fix I know of is to reduce the hardware acceleration in the sound control panel.

I used to have relatively frequent CTD's with Oblivion. I reduced my CPU overclock down to 2.5GHz and my X1900's overclock to 650/1550. It drastically cut down on the crashes. Make sure that you don't have anything running in the background and I've found this to be quite useful:

I'll try turning HDR off, though its a shame if that's what is the problem, cause that's a big reason i upgraded my video card was for HDR lighting support I had an ol 5700 Ultra before this one. Is it possible the overclock BFG did to my 7800 GS (I'm not overclocking it myself at all) isn't stable or something?
yea i figured my soundcard is getting pretty old...but it had been doing alright for me for the longest time, and I've been reading about issues with some newer cards these days. Anyone have a recommendation for a new soundcard they know to be relatively clear of issues?
Thanks for the link to the majorgeeks thing, I had been to blackviper's site before but its been up and down and there's never been such a good guide anywhere else like that. Nice to have it again.

No problem. With those Pentium's you need all the horsepower that you can get.

yea tell me about it....though when I bought it over 2 years ago, it seemed great....and then the Prescott was not as good as they said it was, and I was left along in the dark at night screaming "WHY!?"
one nice thing is when i build a new box in another year or so, i'll be like "damn that's fast"
oh well, it encodes DVDs and media really really well though

LOL. Oblivion doesn't CTD on my rig, it simply reboots it. I dunno what's the problem, the OCing, the temperatures (it's winter here, it's running cold), I dunno.
Maybe if you lower the quality settings, it won't crash that often. Tried a different driver?

i tried the 91.28 from where i was ( i can't remember the driver before that) and they ran everything nice and smooth, however i had the CTD. I've rolled back to the beta 84.25 which came out when Oblivion did, and have not had a CTD since. Its a shame, i really liked the 91.28s
so maybe it was just some sort of driver conflict

Just built my machine and haven't OCed anything on it. every game i have runs sweet as hell, just like obvlivion has in the past; though recently it's been crashing to the desktop frequently.
I've switched between HDR and bloom, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
any suggestions?

CTD could be OC related (as I see you have your CPU overclocked), I was getting alot of crashes in OB, thought it was mod related but as it turned out it was the OC causing the problem, every other game I have were fine it was just this game, OB can really put some stress on your rig, but after spending some time adjusting my OC settings I had it running crash free so far, only thing I really needed was to increase cpu volt a bit. Running stable so far.

I'm not overclocked right now due to summer heat (decided not to take chances).
Really Oblivion just has shody coding for the PC....i chalk up the poor performance and the ctds to it....

I bumped this because I started having the same problem today, I tried a few things and finally fixed it, hopefully it'll help anyone else still getting the same ctd.
It appears my config file got corrupted;
go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion
and rename oblivion.ini, when you start the game again it will build a new config file. You'll need to setup your settings again but hopefully the ctd's will stop.
[edit] btw, currently running FW 91.28 with no problems going on 5 hours
