Wink Differences between OC'ing with RivaTuner and with CoolBits - 06-04-2004, 13:29 | posts: n/a

I've got gf4 ti4200 64ddr 128bit 250/500. With RivaTuner I can overclock till 300/580 and there aren't any artifacts in 3d mark 03, 2001se and in games like Painkiller and etc. But with CoolBits I can overclock till 300/600 without artifacts. What do You think about it? I couldn't find the real reason and I thought You can help me.

There are no differences if you use driver-level overclocking in RT because this module simply passes desired clocks to the driver as Coolbits. But there is difference if you use low-level overclocking, which programms PLLs only and don't touch timings like driver-level overclocking. And it is expalained in documentation BTW.

Thanks. BTW on RT I overclocked hardware, but didn't overclocked drivers. Coolbits overclocks hardware and driver clocks, both clocks. Yes? If it is true, then the result is clear.

Am I right?

Nope, you've got it wrong. Please read my posting again. Neither Coolbits nor RT/driver-level overclocking program PLLs directly.

The only reason driver-level overclocking exists is because of nVidia's GeForceFX series cards. Those are the only cards I've ever heard of whose clock speeds were determined by the driver. Everything else is controlled by hardware, whether it be previous nVidia cards, or any of ATI's cards.
