Question Recording a demo - 02-14-2004, 10:18 | posts: n/a

Can anyone tell me how i can record my own quake III demo?
Also, if I upgraded my version of quake would the benchmarking results change?

~ to bring down the console
/timedemo 1
/record mydemoname

If you download Q3 Bench, on the bottom right hand corner of it, there is a button that brings up a demo help textfile that shows all the demo versions and how they match to the patch versions:

WHERE DEMO FILES ARE LOCATED

If you have never recorded a demo and wish to add demos to Quake3, you
will need to create this folder by hand. All demo files MUST go in this
folder.

The path will look like:

..\Quake III Arena\BaseQ3\Demos\

This information holds true for any version of Quake3 that you have.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHICH VERSION OF QUAKE3 DO I HAVE?

If you've patched Quake3 Arena you should know this offhand. But, if you
don't know or which to check or confirm your version level. Follow these
simple instructions:

Start Quake3 Arena and once loaded press the tilde key (~). Your version
level will be displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the console.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
THREE DIFFERENT DEMO VERSIONS

Depending on your version of Quake3 Arena, there are three different versions
of demos. If you attempt to run the wrong demo version Quake3 will crash and can lock up your system.
----------------------------
If your installation of Quake3 Arena is at version 1.11 through 1.17 there are
two built in demos (demo001.dm and demo002.dm).

If your installation of Quake3 Arena is at version 1.27g-1.27h THERE ARE NO
BUILT IN DEMOS.

If your installation of Quake3 Arena is at version 1.29f there is one built in
demo (FOUR.dm_66)
----------------------------
Demo files that will work on version 1.11 through 1.17 will have the file
extension:
*.dm3 (ie. "mydemo.dm3")

Demo files that will work on version 1.27g-1.27h will have the file
extension:
*.dm_48 (ie. "mydemo.dm_48")

Demo files that will work on version 1.27 and above will have the file
extension:
*.dm_66 (ie. "mydemo.dm_66")

Keep in mind this means that (by default) version 1.27g or 1.27h, Quake3
Arena has NO BUILT IN DEMOS THAT WILL RUN!
