Videocards - 3dfx How the mighty have fallen. Unfortunately the company is gone, but of course we still support the products. Use this forum to discuss anything concerning products using 3dfx chips from the Voodoo series.

I am getting a GF4 Ti but Im thinking about geting a Voodoo (not shaw about which model) as a second card for games like UT that are optimised for 3DFX.

But I have a couple of questions:

Would I have to get a used card or dose someone still make them?

Will it work OK with a AMD?

The GF4 will take up the AGP, so which versions of the Voodoo are avalible in PCI?

A Voodoo should be cheap cause of the age, but is it worth it considering the fact there will be a GF4 in the same system?

I stringly doubt that any 3dfx cards are made anymore, though you might be able to get one that hasn't been used yet. Most likely you'd have to look on Ebay or trade with someone.

Voodoo cards should work fine with AMD.

You can get these in PCI:
Voodoo Graphics (Voodoo 1)
Voodoo 2
Voodoo Rush (don't bother with this one, it's really bad)
Voodoo Banshee
Voodoo 3 (some are PCI, some AGP. The 3500 is AGP only)
Voodoo 4 4500 PCI
Voodoo 5 5500 PCI

Voodoo cards should be OK in with an nvidia card. AFAIK, Win98SE and upwards have support for multi-monitor+2 vid cards. If you're going to use the Voodoo for Glide only, you might consider a Voodoo 2 or Voodoo 2 SLI. If you're really lucky you might score a Quantum3D Obsidian(?) X24, which is basically a Voodoo 2 SLI setup on one board.

The major considerations when going for a Voodoo 5 are its size (10 inches long), the fact that it needs to be connected directly to your PSU for power and its earlier AGP spec. The V5 uses 3.3V signalling, and your motherboard must be compatibe (supports AGP 1.0). Unfortunately, this means that a Voodoo 5 + P4 + Intel chipset is impossible; you must use a chipset other than Intel for P4+V5.

Default Voodoo? bwahahaha - 06-17-2002, 22:14 | posts: n/a

Optimized? Yeah it's also optimized for D3D which even a low end GeForce is gonna run HEEEELLLLLLLA faster than and voodoo u pick up unless u get maybe a 4/5 which will prolly cost u more second hand in the first place than it would to just buy a new GF2 or something.

You say a low-end Geforce with D3D can outrun a Voodoo? I've seen a Voodoo 5 running Glide outrun a Geforce 3 running D3D.
