This, my friend, seems like the absolute ceiling for a G2 MX 400. It's the highest score for a card in that category, running XP of course..
Edit: It's actually pretty impressive for a 32MB card!

OK is it an AGP or PCI card ? If it's AGP we can squeek some more out of it . I was scoring ove 2k with mine and a 1 Gig Duron . If you OC the Duron also that will help . Try the 29.80 drivers . They worked great for my MX series I went through and scored well . Make sure you AGP setting in BIOS is turned to 4X and if you can disable AA in the BIOS also . While your in there set your AGP appeture size to 128 amd then in Windows Set your display advanced properties to AA off , V-sync off and OpenGL performance to best performance . Give these things a try and let us know . Good luck !
Edit : Another 128 Mb of memory would help but , 128 Mb of DDR in that board would realy help ! 256 DDR would rock . Where abouts you live ? Here in AZ at Fry's electronics they have 512 Mb of DDR2100 for 69 bucks this week ! LOL .

Not trying to add to your low score blues, but a friend of mine has a Pentium III 600 mhz and scores around 2800 constantly, strangly enough he has a 32 MB version of the same card and agp 2x.There seems to be something quite wrong with your score.

First of all, GF2MX400 is still a very versatile and oc'able card to date, if u can push it to the limits it can even run nowadays game flawlessly although in stock quality.
Your 1 gig processor is more than required, and 128 Mb of ram is adequate
These are my tips, some of which may sounds stock tips but it really helps in some cases.
- check and ensure if AGP4x is enabled and NOT AGP2x in BIOS
- Use detonator 41.09 for little added performance but the driver is somewhat less stable than 30.82
- Update your chipset drivers (VIA 4-in-1 for VIA mobo users)
- enable Fast-Write in BIOS
- force SBA to be enabled using RivaTuner
- do the benchmark with these things in mind :
1. use the lowest quality available (LOD bias minimum, AA off, Vsync off, Anisotropic off, enable FastLinearMip-Mapping)
2. Use memory optimizer apps such as Rambooster, Cacheman, etc
3. Turn off all memory-resident apps when benching (antiviruses, monitors, etc) except memory optimizers
4. Defragment your HD before benching
5. Do the benchmark first time in the morning when the ambient temperature is colder than day times
- OC the card a bit if necessary (keep it under 200MhzGPU and 250Mhz ram for stability reasons)
- OC the system bus if necessary
- Use AGP turbo mode whenever available
Hope thsese things can help
you should get 2500-3000 3DMarks with your current configuration
Good luck
