Hey all.... new to setting up a home network.. have a little knowledge but looking at all that is avail. on the market, are there better routers and ones to watch out for?? Looking to build a small network at home and to have them all capable of access the internet thru my cable connection. I'm currently reading the tips setting on this website for the basics.. But any knowledge of what is a better router for the price will hep. Any comments would be appreciated. Also is there anything to watch out for or any hints. Feel free to post.

Will be running WinXP on all computers.

Thanks...

Its a good Q, kinda a load of scope
I would proberbly recommend the linksys BEFSR41 or something in that family. Even though i have an smc barricade and find that really really good. The linksys has far more adv features now. However its port fowarding is a bit of a pain in the arse.

I tried setting a VNC connection up, with the SMC it works fine, but the linksys just wouldnt give anything to me. I am sure it can be done, but there are soooo many options it takes a while to get familiar with it.

Read some of the network reviews too. There are loads of hints to pick out too. for a linksys review just google search for one. I really need to do that review

Networking is near the bottom on the right.
Happy reading

I'm currently using the Linksys. Its performing well, they release firmware updates about once a month so support isn;t an issue.

I would look into the following manufactures.

Linksys
Smc
Netgear

[Edit] One thing that needs tweaking by Linksys is their UPnP feature.

Agreed, apart from netgear. They do solid networking stuff generally but i have always found their routers fiddly, and overly complicated. The most recent one i played with didnt even have a DHCP server. Maybe they have changed but their routers in my experience havent been as complete as SMC, and Linksys. BTW if ya find a cisco relativly cheap.. i'll swap you for it !!

Oh and synaps, that Upnp thing plain sux at the moment !!
