PS2 and XBOX must die -

I don’t understand why PS2, X-Box and other console makers don’t have the option to upgrade the video cards. Is it that they don’t want the console to seem like a computer? But then I say, “who cares” it is a computer! Let me go back a few years when PS2 was coming out, I got on the ban-wagon a little late but ended up at a TOYS R US who I stayed in contact with about everyday to see when the pre-sale was going to be. I was first in line the day they had it and a month later picked up my PS2. I was in a WOW effect the first time I played Madden and it was like all the reviews I read over and over months before. I shortly found out that Madden wasn’t going to have online game play that year and that was one of the main reasons I got the console. Around that time I was told about the X-Box and that it would be out a year later and will have better graphics and all and online game play should be out at same time for it. So hell, I sold my PS2 a month after I got it and dug in for the long wait and stuck with my CPU. Madden for the PC “2001” wasn’t very good. In 2002 Madden was nice on the CPU and I think it put the PS2 graphics to shame. Shortly after Madden 2002 X-Box was arriving and I had paid for it in full at EB but three weeks before it was released I saw those nasty controllers! OMG! I got my money back and was sort of pissed I didn’t keep the PS2 all that time. After X-Box was out for a while I realized that the graphics were good but nothing like the GF3 could do on my CPU for Madden and was happy I didn’t have either of the two consoles I was just happy playing on the CPU. EA Sports builds Madden around the PS2 and just perks up the CPU version each year. They have no incentive to make their games around Geforce 3 or ATI 9700. They could look so real and be so awesome if they did. But with a PS2 going on it’s third year and before they make a PS3 maybe another 3 years. That is 6 years of a game built around a graphics card. Look back 6 years ago and remember the best graphics card that was out….. Probably 3DFX Voodoo 2? Now imagine if the games we play now were built for that card. I am saying no matter what gaming companies will build better graphic games no matter what if the consoles will support them but if they have no reason or they reach their peak with a card then they don’t. PS2 or X-Box should have allowed the video card to be an accessory and as the cards by Nvidia or ATI that are in these consoles get better we could by them as we do for CPU. This way games and graphics will grow with technology and not need a warp drive when the new PS3 or X-BOX comes out. “Three steps forward two steps back…..” I used Madden as an example but you can look at a lot of games this way. I think the console is a virus and need to be phased out, I know they wont be but they are holding back the quality and graphics that I want to see from my games.

PC online games=broadband, games.

i agree but here is why consoles will live on:
1) They are simple. Kids can operate them easily and they take up very little space compared to a PC which needs its own desk.
2)They are cheap. Kids can afford to buy them and have them in their own rooms.
3) No need to upgrade. Until the new one comes out anyways. You wont have to worry about your console only getting 10 FPS. Yes I know you need to buy another one in 6 years or so but people usually dont think that far in advance. Plus a PC graphics card is usless after 3 years.
4) No viruses (yet). No crashes (although they are coming out with HDs for them now). Very little tech support needed, unless the thing is just plain broken.
The ironic thing is, consoles are transforming into PCs. They are online capable. They have their own HDDs. They use PC memory and graphics card (albeit outdated). You can buy keyboards and mice for them. They have USB ports on them. Basically the only thing missing is the software.

Good points but!
Most the kids will leave it alone but it seems to me that consoles advertise towards teen and young adults. Most seem to have computers and knowledge that thoes of us who want to buy, spend or upgrade would. I would buy a PS2 TODAY if I could upgrade the video card. It's not only kids playing, and as I said kids go along with what is new and cool and if there buddy has it then they will get it. If it is a game or a new video card for the PS2 some how they will get it. I just feel that the consoles hold the games back that are on CPU as well IE Madden.

Good points too,
but..
Consoles are aimed at the younger age groups because they are purely for gaming. All the extras coming out arent really selling points, the console is for gaming, no glitches, just shove the disk in the drive and away you go.
Pc's on the other hand arent really thought of as mainstream gaming platforms and are therefore sold as a 'family' multimedia platform, good enough for dad to do his work on, good enough for mum to mail her friends, and good enuff for the kids to play games on or browse the net.
Fact is consoles will never die because their are people who will always want to play games easily, and dont want to have the hastle of a pc with its upgrades, crashes, and sometimes jsut being bloody annoying

The V card ain't the issue. The texture Ram is small (2MB) and its programming around that thats an issue. The Texture bandwidth is very fast though. The XBox on the other hand has muchos ram but its all shared by the different sound, graphics, FX chips - not great. The PC's devices normally have their own ram, but then you've got the cost. Consoles are bulit as self contained units be their cheaper to manufacture that way.
The theory could work, but console owners don't like having to constantly upgrade (a console normally lasts longer then a V Card in a PC would - but this is subject to debate).

HOW CAN YOU COMPARE A CONSOLE TO A COMPUTER?!?!?!
Of course a computer may "win" but that's because it costs a lot more money than a console. Don't have to WORRY about the GeForce 12343029842034! Consoles had classics, computers don't, and plus you can have people hook up controllers and compete with each other. Sure you can have a LAN, but who here (as an average person) has that money? Oh no, the PS/2 port goes through the...no wait, is that the serial port. Oh NO! I have all three consoles, so I'm not complaining.
