    Hey Gurus

My beloved (hated) Lumia 950 is dying. Having charging issues/crashes/it not knowing how much charge is left, so it's time to invest in a new phone methinks.

I'm not looking to spend stupid money, but a few things I'd like:
    • Good camera capable of 4K30fps (for YouTube content)
    • 1440p screen ideally
    • Expandable storage (up to 128 GB ideally)

Looking android because iphones are no. Preferably something without bloatware and that will be supported for a few OS generations. I'm SIM only so can buy the handset outright.

    Suggestions please!

The S7 fits all those requirements other than bloat, Samsung enjoy adding bloat, but it can be removed with package disablers or root and system app remove tools / debloat scripts

If you're hoping Android can do what WP can do with expandable storage you'll be disappointed, without root and a fair bit of mucking about, MicroSD cards can only be used to hold media / downloads, you can't install apps to it

At least not with the S7, maybe stock Nougat allows it?

I'm not *too* fussed about expandable for apps, more doc, music and video storage. My main gripe is android is the lack of support (with respect to OS updates) after 18-24 months. My old windows phone is still supported even though that's 3 years old. I know some android manufacurers are better than others.

Samsung keep support for 3 major OS releases, my S5 had KK, LP, and MM, this S7 has had MM, Nougat and will get Android O

After that it's custom ROMs from XDA if you want to stay current

Any other comparable handsets to the S7?

yeah get S7e and flash a custom rom. i recommend Minotaurus Rom S8 port or Batman S8 port. (minotaurs needs romcontrol from playstore which is $5 , not much. Batman has one free).

Pixel/Pixel XL does not support expandable storage but does have the best support of any Android device.

Oh really? That sucks, you'd think in 2017 it would be standard

I use mine for media, have my camera set to save direct to SD, all my music on there, would be running out of room even on a 32GB phone if I was stuck with Internal only

Hope the Pixel 2 has expandable support, either that or isn't a fortune for a 64GB+ version

S7 might be the best bet then. Next question is where can I get one at not a stupid price?

Make sure it is 100% the G930F though, a lot sold on eBay are US Snapdragon models and have a locked bootloader, meaning no custom ROMs / recovery

Ask to see Download Mode model number as firmware / stickers etc can be and are easily faked You want the Exynos CPU International S7 only sold in the UK (G930F)

    Or S7 Edge = G935F

Google doesn't want Android phones to support expandable storage. They want everyone to use Google Drive instead. Manufacturers just refuse to drop support for expandable storage because consumers want it.

No interest in using cloud storage for personal media, and it would be a PITA trying to listen to music on a 3GB data plan if I had to use GDrive every time I wanted to play something

Moto Z, X, G series will set you good! Near stock Android performance, can be obtained unlocked at a reasonable price, and expandable storage!

Why are we talking of year-old phones?

    OP, considered the S8(+)?

Exactly why I stuck to cheapo Pay'n'Go Lumias until I realised I could get flagship on contract, even if they do rip your eyes out over 24 months lol

I'm using a Nexus 6P on Google's Project Fi.... If it wasn't for Project Fi, I'd probably be using a Lumia now on some other prepaid service.
