So I started doing some research into the AMD RX 480 vs the Nvidia 1070 (which from what I can tell kills the 480) when I noticed that there was a reboot of the 1070 due to come out in the near future.

So that got me thinking, is it worth holding out to replace the 480 for a few months and see what the 2070 is like or should I just say the heck with it and pick up the 1070 now?

    Looking for a second opinion!

    Thanks all!

1070 was "updated" three weeks ago when it got a $30 price drop. Nothing else was announced for 1070, and I doubt that there will be any further updates to it in the near future.

That's a very old article. With the 1080 and 1070 minor refreshes I kind of doubt there will be any rebrand into 2080/2070, wouldn't make much sense. The Pascal lineup looks complete to me, the next thing I'd expect out of NVIDIA is Volta, but that won't be coming too soon.

That being said, Vega from AMD is however coming soon, if you're not in a hurry it might be worth waiting to see what it brings to the table and how it's priced. Even if you don't buy Vega it might force lowered prices if it's good. I'd expect Vega around June.

Having come from AMD myself I recommend you wait for VEGA or next-gen nVidia. I waited for a few months with my 7970 and I almost got the GTX970. Ended up buying the GTX 1070 for the same price as the GTX 980 few months after because prices in Australia are ridiculous. So basically got myself a slightly better 980 Ti for the price of a 980 because of those few months.

That's a good call, I forgot about the Vega coming out in a few months time. Blackfyre, you make a good point as well with regards to those few months... maybe they will make the wait worth it.

Thanks guys, think I may just hold off and see what the future holds for Vega.

You could be waiting a while. Volta will likely be around Q3-Q4.

BTW 1070 got a price drop with slightly faster memory( up to board partners to use)

Out of those 2, the 1070 will run circles around the 480 and it will be a massive upgrade coming from the 760.

You could wait, but then you could wait forever.

Only 1060 and 1080 got the memory upgrade AFAIK.

    That of course is true.
And I don't know for you Nvidians, but for us Vegans 3 months is nothing.

I mean 9 months ago, regarding Vega launch, Raja himself said: "Still long way to go",
and we translated it as "just around the corner" :D

Yeah but what will Vega be? Is it going to challenge the 1080ti? If so, it's out of OP's budget.

1070 is using the same memory as 1060 so it should be possible for a board maker to "upgrade" 1070 as well. This upgrade won't be "official" of course whatever that means.

Btw, OP, while there's little reason to wait for Vega if you're choosing between 480 and 1070, there's certainly a reason to wait for the upcoming Polaris refresh Radeon 500 series. It should launch in about three weeks from now.

Vega should be considerably faster than the RX 480/580, so the question is, what will fill the huge performance and price gap?

A few months is forever only if you reside on a dentist's chair. If the OP is in no hurry, there's no particular reason not to wait to see what Vega can offer. If he can't wait, then the 1070 is a nobrainer if he has got the money for it. 480 can't obviously compete in power, although it's much cheaper.

What fills the "huge" performance gap between 1060 and 1080?

I would get the 1070 now. It's at a decent price. Even if new GPUs come out, they ll be tough to get at first due to high demand. You may be waiting a long time. So better to upgrade now and enjoy.

With 1080 ti out, plenty of barely used 1080s on ebay selling at lower prices with Warranty left. May be worth checking out those used prices and bypass the 1070.

I just upgraded from crossfire 290s was going to get the ti but seen 1080s going for £350 so half the price an I'm well happy with it.
when amd get there **** together and release the 590 and its good il just sell the 1080 for 300- 350 and get that so no loss really.

selling the 290s for 100 each got 1 left so only paid £150 for a good upgrade.
