Yes, another one of those annoying questions regarding which PSU . I currently have an Enermax Platimax 750W which I am happy with for my existing system, but I would like something new for the new system. I run my computer 24/7, basically since I built it at the time of Ivy Bridge's release (4 years ago?). I was considering the new EVGA SuperNova G3, model 220-G3-0750-X1, however they haven't been released yet in Australia. Newegg does have a webfront for Australia now, the US site has it for US$110, but as soon as you select Australi, but under US dollars, it jumps to $130 but shipped from the US. Newegg also doesn't include GST, which is illegal in Australia (all list prices must be the endpoint value), but I guess being US based they get away with that. Anyways, by the time you include the 10 percent GST, plus shipping, and exchange rate conversion it is uneconomical. Plus importantly the US$20 surcharge is completely unnecessary. So, I have to make another choice. For all around the same price I can get either (names copied and pasted): EVGA SuperNova G2 750W (220-G2-0750-XR) XFX XTR Series Gold 750W Modular Power Supply SilverStone Strider Platinum 650W Power Supply Be Quiet! Straight Power 10 700W CM Power Supply Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 750W 80 Plus Gold Power Supply Before someone says read reviews, I have done that with most of them, however as the reviews are all on different websites they can't really be compared. So any strong recommendations for any of these, for and against? The EVGA and Thermaltake PSU's have a 10 year warranty and the others have a 5 year warranty. However, probably the Silverstone Strider Platinum and EVGA Supernova G2 are the pick of the bunch from what I can find... I'm sure 650W would be enough...
I don't understand ... You want to change the Enermax Platimax because is 4yr old ?. That PSU is Tier 1 will last Decades !
My main reason for not considering the EVGA G2 is that the model is basically 3 years old, and although is excellent, the others such as the Silverstone unit has basically caught up to the G2 levels. The G3 is basically 'perfect' but there isn't the availability yet in Australia which is why I am looking at other options. All these options are around the same price here. The Enermax Platimax is a pretty oldschool PSU when it comes to other options now, in terms of ripple, voltage stability etc. It's not that it is bad, but whatever PSU I use now I probably won't replace for say at least 4 years, meaning the Enermax would be going on 8 years of constant 24/7 use.
+1 , eVGA has the best reviews + the best customer support. I have an eVGA Supernova G3 1300w that the fan after 3+ years 24/7 use for a folding rig was started making grinding noises and was going bad. I contacted eVGA and told them that i needed a replacement fan for my psu and instead they sent me a brand new sealed in the box psu advanced rma and had it in my hands 2 days later , now that's customer support ! Go for it.
Might have been tier 1 at one stage, but under this list it's considered tier 2: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html
Even if the others have caught up to older Superflower designs (Aka what's inside the G2), don't EVGA offer a ten year warranty? From what I've seen (at least in the UK) that's longer than the other options you've listed. Their customer service is usually spot on also. Edit: Just reread the OP, you're already aware of the warranties it seems. Either way I think I'd lean toward the G2, assuming the others have "caught up" as newer designs, you still have that 10 year warranty and a tried and tested platform. You know it's going to perform well in the long term, and even if it doesn't you'll have few issues getting a replacement.
I know, I want the G3, just they aren't available here yet . I could wait a couple of months, but I'm not going to pull apart a newly built system them to install the new PSU! I hate buying old models when new models are just around the corner, particularly when they can be had for the same price. I also damaged some of the SATA power cables on the Enermax, just the thin plastic strip of the plug part, so that's another excuse for me to upgrade.
But installing a PSU with cable management takes all of 30mins. Not like the plastic matters, maybe you are just looking for excuses
Probably . I got the PSU at the same time as I got the i5-3570K, as soon as it came out. Would you believe that was almost 5 years ago! So I've been running this PSU for 5 years 24/7 (actual computer on time, not standby. I do a lot of processing of stuff etc), and quite often in a warmer room. I guess I just don't like the thought of a new build with a 5 year old PSU. You're right though, which is good because it's helped me come to the decision to use the 5 year old PSU for now, and replace it when the G3 becomes available (unless it becomes available within the next couple of weeks). A 10 year warranty is nice, but figure it this way, with a 10 year warranty you would expect it to last at least 11 years. Hypothetically if the EVGA G2 was available 9 years ago and you purchased it then, would you use it because it is seemingly perfectly fine, and will 'probably be' for a couple of years or more? Or would you replace it?
There's nothing wrong with it. I bought a 1000w seasonic platinum and my system was drawing near 1000w(multiple sli setups over the years). I used it since 2011 until about 5 months ago. Never had any hiccups and that PSU will probably last forever. Most good PSUs will easily outlast the warranty. Considering your setup probably uses less than 400w in most games, your PSU has had an easy life. It may not be the best PSU out there especially compared to new ones but it's still pretty good. Realistically there's no real reason to replace it. I replaced mine because i needed another PSU for another setup.
you are the only person I have ever met in 30 years who wants to upgrade his power supply for a processor, lol most new processors use less wattage than their previous one anyway, it comes down to what graphic card do you want to pair your CPU with and a 480 is fine so anything 500 watts or more is fine you are fine bro except none of those crap power supplies on your list are corsair I wouldnt be using a power supply for gaming for decades lol a PSU absolutely can die just hope it does not take out all your other components with it its not a bad idea to replace the PSU every 5-8 years. Im not saying throw it away, just dont put it in your most expensive gaming rig and move it over to ye olde file server.
I don't want to upgrade it because I'm getting an upgrade specifically, it's more the second reason. I got my current rig basically right when Ivy Bridge came out, if I bought any sooner I would have a Sandy Bridge rig. I looked up the release date for the i5-3570K - 31 May 2012. So my PSU which has been in an always on system (24/7), doing a lot of processing, encoding, gaming etc, is 4.5 years old. If I upgrade, I probably won't be switching out the PSU until I need to switch out the motherboard again. I have to consider the age of the PSU at that point, not the age of the PSU now.
PSU are built to last longer than that. New PSU can blow up next day due to being inferior. Check if voltage is stable and keep it. Unstable voltages are signa of wear
