Since I made another topic about upgrading my Asus CU2 R280 to a newer card that supports DX12 I realized that I will need to upgrade my cpu and don't know which I honestly should go with. Was thinking about going with a i7 just because I want to get more life with the cpu and play modern games at high or high mixed with Ultra on 1600*900 resolution with at least 45-60fps.

    Upgrade CPU for what exactly?

280 is by far the weakest link in that system.

A good OC with 2400mhz ram will be all you will need for a while.

Dude, I have the same cpu as you and I'm playing games at 60fps. Also, your gpu is DX12 compatible.

Just upgrade a GPU and you are good to go. You dont need an i7 to play games.

rx480 or gtx1060 would be a good upgrade.

    K...

You know what you have to do.

Put (less of) that cash into some cooling and go for it.

Yeah, we've noticed. Even so, 4690k 3.9ghz boost clock is enough to drive even a 1070.

His only concern should be what GPU to pick up (depending on the budget).

Yea I agree, the CPU is solid. Just pointed out that overclocking isn't really an option for OP.

I dont think limitation to 1600mhz memory will be an issue. Not that higher memory bandwitdth is that much beneficial.

When I bought the Gigabyte G1 Sniper B6 I heard it wasn't an over clocking board so I never really to attempted to over clock the cpu since My current gpu which is overclocked to 1000Mhz from 980Mhz it handles all my games pretty well but I want to get a gpu with 5.1 shaders and dx 12 so I can play games like battlefield 1 and Resident Evil 7 on high settings maybe mixed with ultra, i'm also planning on upgrading my memory to 4gb sticks. I'm not to familiar with over clocking the cpu with my motherboard and I have my cpu cooled by the corsair H75 liquid cooler.

EDIT: I'll have about $750 to spend.

your current monitor is 1600*900 resolution?

$750 could get you a 1070 and a new monitor.

Your CPU is fine - I'm rocking 4690k paired with a Fury and I play everything at max details, 0 dips below 60fps at 1080p, occasionally I do supersampling or VSR too.

At the moment my CPU is left at stock clocks as I don't actually need any higher performance from it.

Sorry for the noobish question about resolutions but what's wrong with the 1600*900 resolution monitors I never had the need for a higher res then what I game with now.

A $129 1050ti will max that resolution out....

Upgrade your gpu to a fury from newegg.com. $259.99 is a steal and will last you for couple more years. I have a I5 myself and it handles all my games with ease. But i will be going ryzen+fury later this year cause of the issues with intel boards i have had (basically lan port issues).

And a RX 480 wouldn't? What kind of logic is that?

Games look much better at higher resolutions. If you go for the gtx1070, that gpu is going to be a waste for your current monitor.

Yeah you don't need an i7. Your i5 is powerful enough to drive any card that is out currently. I have a 1080p 22in TV as my monitor and with my 1070 and with DSR I have everything upscaled to 4k for the games that support it and it looks beautiful if I do say so myself.
