....And an ASUS STRIX X99 Gaming motherboard.

Not sure how, or why, hadn't even started overclocking so I guess it's just bad luck!

PC shutdown while playing BF1 and upon trying to fire it up again it wouldn't post with code 00 and the CPU LED lit up on the motherboard, both are now on their way back for RMA so I'm back on the trusty old X58 platform with my 980X.

Was fun while it lasted though! :)

Yeah, first thing I did was pull the PSU and test it in my old PC, tried everything to get it working again.

When I contacted the place I bought it from they just recommended I RMA the CPU and Motherboard, apparently this quite a common problem on ASUS X99 boards, the VRM regulator fails and sends crazy amounts of voltage to the CPU which obviously isn't good...

Sh1t happens. Atleast you still have your X58 until you RMA.

Ouch, that's an expensive thing to break... XD

Still on X58 here (at home anyway), waiting to see if Zen's any good before I take the plunge :p

Hope you get it sorted out, would be a shame for such expensive equipment to just... poof and die.

As has been said these things do happen, surprising it's happened to something quite this expensive but it is what it is.

    Was running nicely however!

Agree with Asus X99 boards, they killed few CPU just check OCN about the killed CPU

Personally I went with ASRock know my luck this would happen to me as well

But still bas luck there, but at least you are covered

    Hope this helps

    Thanks, Jura

What a weid coincidence..Back on November, my 6950x suddenly died after using for 10 Days..4.3ghz @ 1.25v..After receiving the replacement, it also died after using for 7 days with the same Overclock.

What I did was I RMA the motherboard I was using at that time, Asus X99 Deluxe First Gen (Non USB 3.1)..

After I received my third 6950x, Changed my Motherboard to Asus X99 Strix Gaming and so far so good..It's been 2 months now and still Kicking..

    Able to Overclock the 6950x to 4.5ghz 24/7 Stable...:D

    Nice score :D

Crazy how Mobo's/CPU's like this are just dying for no reason, surprised this hasn't been talked about more considering how many people i've come across with the same problem.

Yeah possibly, although from what I've seen around the internet this problem isn't exclusive to the 6950X, people with lower end X99 CPUs also have problems with the CPU dying.

Hopefully the RMA is nice and quick, missing it already.

I read about that issue mainly being isolated to STRIX boards but it could happen to anyone really.

    Bad luck

i see you hadn't started to OC yet but did you have xmp turned on ?
On my board if i have xmp on the BLK goes to 125 mhz and the voltages go to crazy levels particularly the CPU VCCIO

XMP was indeed enabled so maybe this could of been a problem, should hopefully have replacements next week, not sure how much I trust ASUS boards now though, might ask for a different brand.

I work on the RMA area of a retail store and i seen some faulty ASUS X99 boards suddendly applying 1.8v - 1.9v of Vcore and killing CPUs.
I found searching online similar cases too ... so update your BIOS and keep the eye on the vcore

If you can change the motherboard for another model go for Asrock, Zero Issues Rock Solid!. Most of RMA on X99 boards i see on my work are ASUS

So the retailer has decided not to replace the motherboard and just replace the CPU as apparently the motherboard is working fine...

See how long it takes to kill this new CPU when i receive it i guess.

Be Careful Sir..It's very similiar to my case where my Asus X99 Deluxe is still fine but killed two 6950x..After Replacing the Motherboard, the third 6950x is still alive today..

isn't easy to spot the problem because the is a peak voltage for a few seconds. Please update your bios and keep eye on the vcore.

The board was on the latest bios but I'll monitor the vcore for any abnormalities.

It's ok, I'm fully expecting this board to kill this second CPU as well but if that's what it takes to convince the retailer it's the Motherboard at fault then so be it.
