As above, i game at 2560x1440 and am looking to replace my watercooled over volted/overclocked 780gtx with a 1080gtx but wondered if my 2700k (stable at 4.9ghz) with 16gb RAM will be a significant bottleneck, i mostly use DCS Flight sims, BF4 and COH2. Thanks
Nope. The latest CPUs aren't much faster than the 2700K. (In case you didn't notice, CPU performance has stagnated in the last 6 years.)
No, you are fine. Actually your 2700k with that overclock probably performs same or even better than latest Intel 4 core CPUs (on stock). If you play games on max video settings, 1080gtx will ALWAYS bottleneck on graphic demanding games. What's your monitor refresh rate?
Its an IIyama PROLITE AH-IPS LED 27" 2560x 1440 that i run at 60hz as the graphics card runs an Asus Pro-Art 1920x1200 as well.
Honestly, I think GTX1080 is a waste for 1440p@60hz. While it might be future proof, pricewise GTX1070 fits much better for sustaining 60 fps in 1440p resolution. GTX1080 shines if you want to game on higher refresh rate monitors (120/144hz)
well a moderate OC'ed 980Ti @ 1400mhz+ sometimes isn't enough at 1440p (latest games "maxed") and max OC'ed 1070 is just around that. I think its safe to go with 1080gtx.
Well the latest DCS Beta engine loves GPU power and i've always bought the absolute fastest GPU i can at the time, future proofing works with OCing and watercooling, my 780gtx has lasted well as did my 580gtx before that, i have generally skipped a generation.
^ In that case maybe wait 1-2 more months and then decide when 1080TI arrives? 1080GTX will drop its price too a bit.
You should be golden for a while. When framerate eventually suffers, keep an eye on cpu use per core to see if any max out. Or monitor GPU use. If it doesnt max out when framerate drops, its most likely ram too slow or CPU too slow. Faster ram will help increase minimum framerates as long as you dont increase the timings too far. Your 2700K accepts up to 2133MHz ram. A slight bclk overclock will get you a little more.
God do I hate the buzzword "bottleneck" when it comes to CPUs and gaming.. 90% of the time it's sites looking for kickbacks for page clicks to upgrade 5% of the time it's uninformed people in comments sections looking to pound their chest to make it seem they are informed tech savvy insiders. LOL YOUR 2600k IS ANCIENT TECHNOLOGY NEWB!! BOTTLENECK!! UPGRADE IT, LOL YOU'RE POOR 5% of the time the term is actually used in a truthful manner.. CPU progression has been laughable since Sandy...
Thanks guys, I'm not new to performance PCs, I've been custom building since 1999 and have water cooled since we were using fish pond pumps, just wondered if anybody had actual experience of running a 2700k at 4.9 at 1440p with a 1080gtx. I run my RAM at 1600mhz due to compatibility with the four sticks, the OC and the mono, I had 2133mhz in but couldn't achieve suitable stability.
I built this rig as the 2700k and 780gtx came out, clocked them both and it has remained pretty much unchanged since then, apart from reworking the TJ07 internals. Il wait until the 780Ti comes out, will probably be horrendously expensive in the UK due to the current exchange rate. The 16GB of RAM may become an area that forces me to upgrade as the DCS Beta currently eats up around 14GB.
@ 1440p your CPU should be no issue at all. 1440p is a common res nowadays and is easy to run even with lesser cards than gtx 1070/1080. Its certainly much easier to run than when 1080p became mainstream many years ago, so a gtx1080 is not mandatory really, unless you want to take better advantage of higher refresh rate (120/144hz) monitors.
The latest DCS graphics engine is exposing my 780GTX, games like BF4 and COH2 are great though. Oh and my RAM runs at 1866mhz not 1600.
Oh absolutely, an upgrade from a 780 would be required to get fuller advantage of 1440p, just that it doesnt need to be a gtx1080. A 1070 could do it easily for less. But if your budget allows for a 1080, go for it.
I've found it makes sense to go for the fastest card then with an overclock its no drama skipping a generation without a real hit with performance on modern games. Il give my 780gtx to my lad to replace the 580gtx he currently has (an old card of mine), the 580 will go into my daughters SIMs rig that runs an aircooled 560Ti.
There's no card money can buy that is "enough". There are games where a 1080 is not enough for 1440p. Getting a slower card just means you're willing to accept more FPS drops than you'd get with a 1080.
