Hi all. I have a Sapphire 7870 OC card that I've had for a while and I was wondering your thoughts on if I should upgrade or maybe wait. I do not like spending huge amounts on video cards. Thanks!

I'm currently looking at the RX470 but you might want to consider the GTX1060 3GB version, which are around the same price. Not cheap but not to expensive either.

RX470/480 4GB are not that expensive and it would be a huge upgrade.

@Undying - Are you thinking of upgrading?

My 280X (bought 2nd hand but unused) is only clocked at 850 (should be 950 for this model) because it's very unstable beyond 870 ! That's why I'm looking at a RX470 as I reckon I'll get a 30 - 50% performance boost. What do you think?

My 280X is doing a 1165mhz 1.250v stable no artifacting, shame yours is such a crappy sample. :(

Btw, for both you and op both 470/480 looks a like a good upgrade without spending much. I personally would go with RX480.

    Take a look :

OT: @Jagman: Got if from anyone trusted? If the card is not busted, you could have some bios optimized for mining with low clocks and voltage. Ensure the bios firmware matches any on the techpowerup db for that card.
Those listed have at least 1000MHz on boost clock, so it's really strange that your can't jump to it (plus a higher voltage).

Other than that, check on GPU-Z which vddc it gets while running on 3D, also what temps are you getting on GPU and VRM.

@OP Even an OC'd Tahiti makes a considerable difference to that 7870 on some modern games, so a RX470 or 4GB RX480/3GB 1060 be a very worthy upgrade if you can afford it.

I'll look into the voltages etc. AlleyViper. But I'm actually looking at building a 2nd cheap gaming set up for someone else, all from spare parts that I have.

@ Undying - Must admit the RX480 is still tempting me...

@Jagman we can take look into that 280X of yours and determine why cant it go higher than 850mhz (something is definitely wrong). Many helpful users around with Tahiti cards.

You should probably make your own thread at some point.

@naterko sorry for offtopic talk. :)

Yep, apologies to naterko for derailing the thread a bit...

@ Undying - Performance is OK but it isn't what it should be, as you say. May do a bit more investigating but I've been using it like it for a year lol.

If you are planning to keep that fx cpu, go for the GTX 1060.

RX 470 would be a good upgrade. The Rx 480 even more so, but more expensive.

    Both worthy upgrades.

Also, OC your cpu if you have not already.. you will see a improvement with a newer card.

Thats true though, less overhead. Nvidia cards tend to perform better with slower CPU's. Still, 1060 6GB should be considered only, the 3GB ver should be avoided.

Ive been out of the game for a while now how does the new Rx 480 stack up against the gtx 1060?

    @Jagman

I can give you my BIOS for XFX 280X DD -> It will rock on your GPU 99% sure :)

    Flash that baby (Elpida Memory)
    My Mega

Also you can adjust V in this one.
Ive set top V to 1.193v and Mem to 1575MHz Clocked like GHz Ed 1050MHz
You can adjust this in BIOS editor if needed, also dont make any Custom Fans curve/obsolete here you have nice In-BIOS curve :)

    Stay Happy and Frosty

With those voltage mods on it I think it might go into melt down OnnA

Downloaded it, thanks (don't know if I've got the balls to use it though....)

OT: You should make your own thread to tackle this issue, and upload your bios for anyone to take a good look at and check ASIC Q value on GPU-Z. 1.2V is a common stock voltage for the lowest ASIC range, so it might just be the correct value for your card. It's good to have a custom bios, but you should try to understand what's wrong right now, and if it's even a bios problem.

High ASICQ 280x aren't much common, but I have a friend with a mid one (70.4%) that will use 1.163V at boost clock instead of ~1.2V with stock bios, being good up to ~1050/1600 (1.2V will do about 1100-1125).

My 7970 for 1050/1575 only needs 1.050V (3D clock stock voltage on that leaky 82% chip), and anything above 1,15V will start to be really hot. But I guess there aren't 280x with 1.050 or 1.112V at the highest clock as in the non-GHz 7900, which could have trouble with 1.2V (mostly VRM temps).

@op, wait for 470D with 1536SP or 1792SP. Should be priced ~130 bucks. If you have FX, you should think about Nvidia's gpu (am I heretic?), e.g. 1060 or 1050Ti. I had FX-8300 + R9 380X and still have nightmares about cpu overhead.
