I just realized my SSD is set in bios as IDE...I understand to get the best performance out of an SSD, one should have it configured in AHCI..is that true? Also, would you recommend fresh OS install, when switching from IDE TO AHCI? I have samsung 840
If you can get Windows to load after switching to AHCI in your bios, there is absolutely no reason to clean install.
I enabled AHCI after the fact when I got my ssd this is one method and there are a few more floating around just Google them.No need to reinstall if you're like me it's a total pita to do a reinstall.. http://www.tenforums.com/drivers-ha...-ahci-mode-after-windows-10-installation.html
Used that same method when I discovered my Dads machine was set to IDE for his SSD too, switched to AHCI fine, but didn't make any difference to performance Wondering if it would make a difference with a clean install in the correct AHCI mode instead
I don't know never tried performance numbers before I did it but after the benchmarks are right where they should be so it didn't hurt.
Be interested to see some proper tests, IDE vs AHCI Safemode switch vs clean install switch Would have to have a spare machine to try it on
^^^ this If you are on Win7 install MicrosoftFixit50470.msi first: http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=95592594324834075996 ...then restart Windows and enter BIOS, switch from IDE to AHCI, save and exit, Windows will boot and install generic MS drivers for AHCI, let him finish and restart at the end of procedure. Upon Win7 boot install latest chipset drivers for your motherboard, you'll see AHCI in drivers options while installing.
Here is great older benchmark http://archive.******************com/?option=com_content&task=view&id=505 AHCI is worth it and if chipset supports AHCI then there is no reason not to use AHCI Hope this helps Thanks,Jura
