    Hi gurus,

My Windows 10 (on SSD) startup started to:bang:. Each time after windows starts it will freeze for a few minutes at times and only becomes normal after 15 minutes. Going thru Event Viewer, I saw these error message.

The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

This was repeated for quite a number of messages. Is my SSD failing? What can I do to repair the bad blocks?

    Thanks guys.

(PS: ignore the spec to the left. Its been ages since I came here)

Check for smart errors using a utility and go from there.

Bad blocks will simply be remapped and should not cause any problems, over time you are bound to get a few. As suggested check out SMART status, I do think it is something else.

Thanks for the reassuring words guys.

Actually this kinda relates to my previous post on the errors found in some of the SMART reader tools I used. Below are various SMART result from these tools. My SSD is a mSata Liteon SMS128L9M.

GSC reported the SSD as passed.

    Speedfan
Reported status as No Error, but End-to-End Error is red.

    CrystalDiskInfo
Reported health status as Good but no percentage. No red indicators.

Should I be worried since some of the SMART tools reported some kind of error or high wear usage? I see some others still 90% after 2 years use.

    Thanks again.

Your SSD is fine. As far as SSD health at 70%. It think it is just misreading the value, or if you use the SSD a lot and it is early gen TLC it is possible it is tagged at 70%.

BTW even if it reaches 0% lifespan, the SSD isn't going to suddenly die, it might go on for years to come.

    Hi there

Can you try test/benchmark with HD Tach,I've used that to pinpoint slowdowns on HDD or if there is any slowdown

What I know from personal experience with faling HDD usually what can cause slowdown on HDD if yours Reallocated Sector Count is high..

    Hope this helps

    Thanks,Jura

I tested using HD Tach as adviced and both long and short runs got me 360~390 MB/s. This is on a mSata MLC SSD (Marvell controller) - basically a rebranded Plextor M6M.

On and off I still encounter freezes for a couple of minutes which I think is caused by the bad blocks. Any way I can repair or tell windows to ignore these?

If chkdsk comes clean, not much you can do.

Maybe the manufacturer has a utility you can use to check the disk.
Make sure its up-to-date on firmware.

This data is not very good. Run HD Senintel, right click in SMART tab and choose Decimal data fields.
Take note of Reallocated Sector Count and Reallocated Event Count. If they constantly increase (and especially after freeze) then disk is probably failing. Warranty may or may not replace it yet.

Ran again as you advised. RSC is 2490368. REC is 304. Both are reported as Always Passing.

If RSC is really dying, then its kinda deja vu for me as my previous HGST harddisk unexpectedly died on me with this problem.

Oh great. Now I have this sinking feeling in my stomach....:puke:

Well these values seem really high, however it's not entirely clear how your disks firmware calculates them (maybe 1 does not mean 1 in this case..). I'd say just keep an eye on them if they increase or not. At least they are the same now as they were when you posted hexadecimal values..

As far as Always passing - this is basically determined by a normalized value threshold set by manufacturer. In this case RSC normalized value is 100 and only if it would fall all the way to 0 would disk report value not passing..

You might try performing full format on disk. This would write to each sector of disk and mark bad ones as unusable. Giving the limited information available I just speculate maybe just maybe some part of NAND memory has failed and disks firmware needs more time to mark all sectors..

    What i would do...
Within the Parted Magic live cd, secure erase the SSD.Will rejuvenate the hard drive...then with Gparted format with bad blocks options, will create a partition table without the marked bad blocks, thus avoiding any further error. And have a 10% raw partition for SSD provisioning.

I have exact same problem before I have cheap sata cable (red or yellow) always cause errors, I ordered good brand ASUS SATA6 cable (black) works charm and transfers files much faster, you can get cables at EBAY.
