+40% IPC is nowhere near enough to beat skylake.

No but it will have 8 cores with Haswell IPC, thats sounds nice if pricing is right.

That's not what they're aiming for, it's a fresh start on a new platform for AMD. This hasn't happened for years now since being stuck on AM3 forever.

AMD doesn't have to beat Skylake in lightly threaded tasks. They just have to be within a reasonable margin, at the right pricing with the right feature set. Zen should compete just fine in heavily threaded applications though.

If AMD gives me enough reason to get Zen, I will.

+40% from excavator is close enough to skylake. With new platform and hopefully competitive prices AMD will be back in the game. Even if it falls 10% short it is enough. Bulldozer and the like were left in dust in certain situation while those processors did shine in others. Gaming must have been the biggest loss for AMD.

Their current lineup that is old as hell already competes mighty fine in heavily threaded tasks

8 actual cores with +40% IPC over their latest CPU cores (which are not what the 8350 has), are Skylake territory. Add the ACTUAL extra 4 cores in, and there is no way that a 4-core Skylake can be faster in multithreaded scenarios.

Is Zen going to be able to support Optane?

Well, if it is +60% IPC over fx8350 then yeah.

apples to oranges. 6700k is 4c/8t, Zen is 8c/16t

I don't care if Zen doesn't beat skylake.

If it is "close" with competitive pricing, I think that is a win for AMD.

Tons of people out there don't need the absolutely best CPU, they want a very good cpu at a good price.

It might be a win in terms of what enthusiasts see, but people really underestimate how financially screwed AMD is. They don't need a win, they need a big win.

Didn't AMD also released a statement about not wanting to be the budget option? And zen being more than just a budget chip?

If that's also by single core performance then it could be, what's current Fx8350 single core cinebench15 scenario? so around 2x, and we can get aprox. final score..

Edit: looked around and found this passmark

    Passmark
    AMD FX-8370 Eight-Core (Orochi)
    1,515

so around 2.7 if its not 100% scaling and that makes it faster then

    Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz
    2,529

    Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.00GHz
    2,329

True, but price point is where this is going to determine how successful Zen is. If an 8 core Zen costs the same or less than a 6700k, one would assume the Zen would be a hit.

If this is true, then yes it would be over Skylake even. But AMD has said that about Bulldozer over K10 as well.
