I am in the market soon for a new graphics card. Havent bought one since GTX 670 so anything will be nice. I am reading alot about the GTX 1080. I have never bought an AMD card but i am nto against doing so. I do like Nvidia better but I dont realy have a bias. Whatever is the better bang for the buck for me. My question is will the new Polaris beat the GTX 1080/1070? Or what are they banking on? Just lower performance for a lower price?

AMD always has best bang for the buck.

however, polaris will not beat the 1080 or the 1070. Its a different market segment (mainstream vs performance)

it really depends on what res/freq you game it.

We haven't seen anything yet, but don't expect a Polaris part to be faster than a 1080. It's more ore less what The Mac said. I have hopes for the upper Polaris part vs the 1070, but we'll see.

If you can hang on, Vega sounds promising.
I'd be getting a 490X if they manage to push it out before 2017

I would also keep an eye on eBay and similar sites. Plenty of awesome cards are going cheap atm due to people getting ready to upgrade. I just bought a 980ti for £300 today. There was one sold on here for £270 recently too.

You'll be able to buy a 1070 for that price soon, dont buy a 980ti even if its £300.

    Patience is a virtue.

I would think oc'd 980ti will beat oc'd 1070. So only real reason to buy 1070 for similar price is efficiency or VR.

Wait for a month and see what is going on.

... and if you don't have any VR interest, the 1070 won't offer much more over a proper clocking 980Ti I guess.

1070 won't cost £300 anytime soon. Looking at the 970 prices, I bought mine on release day for £275 and the MSI Gaming 970 still costs exactly £275 on OcUK. The 1070 will release at either £349 or £399 and will not drop, guaranteed. While it'll be a good card, I got my 980ti cheaper and I game at 1440p where the wider memory bus will come handy. I'm expecting the 1070 to perform similar or just below the 980ti at 1080p, at 1440p the 980ti should pull away. There won't be much in it.

OP, definitely keep an eye on used 980ti, maybe some AMD guys will be selling their FuryX to get the 1080 so there might be a few around. Some don't like buying second hand hardware but for example I bought my 980ti off a guy who is an avid gamer. He paid £520 for it in November. He'd just had a baby so he doesn't have the time to game and he said all he plays is Rocket League anyway so he's putting his watercooled 780 back in and selling the 980ti. He was asking £350 for it but I got him down to £300 (could pay cash and collect same day so that probably swayed him). The card was in great condition and plenty of warranty left on it. Used doesn't necessarily mean bad :)

I would set a budget of the most you are willing to spend. It will cut out a lot of speculation and fanboy arguments. A lot will be known very shortly, be patient.

I'm on the same boat at the moment but until AMD does not bring Vega+HBM2 on the table to be able to compare I'll stay put. My 290x can still kick quite good even in eyefinty at the moment, no rush for me!!:)

Also not so many games require that amount of HP at the moment.

I'll upgrade to Zen for shore (if performs as expected) :nerd:, if not Intel here I come!

I plan to do the same. Any idea how warranties would work when the original purchase was done by someone other than the current card holder aka me?

Just so many factors here lol. I hate the idea of buying a used card from someone since you just don't know the quality of the card or how it was treated before therefore could be so many potential problems and hard ones to rectify. We are still talking hundreds of dollars not like $50 or something. Is Vega supposed to the AMD carad that destroys the 1080? Or are they jsut planning it to be a highly efficient card instead of pure power?

In all fairness, most amd cards usually sit alongside the nvidia cards, in their respective price range. With Nvidia usually having the upper hand.
Now I prefer Amd cards, but the GTX1080 certainly got an excellent review.
And since you're already an nvidia user, I would advise you to look for just that.

As for vega, I'm guessing nvidia will counter that with a TI version of the 1080.
Then Polaris, well, you could wait for the reviews and then decide.

wait for Polaris, i think AMD will have the better price per $ value cards, while nvidia 1080 will be the strongest.

Normally they have to register it uber their name, that's for most extended warranties. A solid company should honour a warranty even if this is not the case.

op please do not listen to these people saying amd won't beat or match 1080/1070.
I am confident the 1070 will lose to polaris pro and Polaris xt will either match or beat 1080 the difference will be between drivers and clocks the and cards are running 1300mhz stock who would not want 1080 performance at 300 dollars since the specs on polaris xt and 1080 are the same.

if you are looking for a recent performance per dollar comparison...
techpowerup included one in their 17th may GTX 1080 review:

    https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_1080/28.html

generally you just go from the highest % value up until you found a card that matches your FPS/gaming needs...
for example i would stop at a 390 at the moment. because i know its performance will suffice for everything i want to play.
other people who for example dont play too demanding games may already stop at a GTX 950.

when i buy a graphics card this is the general principle how i decide. but of course one data source is not enough. just the general way of doing it... work your way through the value toplist until you say "yup thats a card with enought speed for me". repeat with other site's perf/dollar toplists until you have a data basis that is sufficient for you to do a purchase.

EDIT: also take into consideration that the example i posted is USD comparison form newegg. so maybe it's not as accurate if you are from EU!
but the tendencies are correct no matter what

This kind of comparison is usually OK. But when I look at something everyone knows well in performance like Fury vs Fury X.
Cheapest Fury i see here (tax included) costs $520 (With our tax).
Cheapest Fury X is for $803 (same tax included). That's 54.4% higher price.
But they place Fury only as 14% more cost efficient. How much weaker Fury would need to be to guarantee only 14% higher cost efficiency?

If Fury delivers only 73.8% of performance of Fury X, then it would be only 14% more cost efficient. But that level of performance would put it into R9-390X category.

But then it gets even worse as r9-390x costs here $487 (tax included). That's only 6.3% cheaper than Fury.
But again they show it as 27.8% more cost efficient. Does it actually make r9-390x stronger than Fury since both costs nearly same, but r9-390x apparently delivers quite more bang for buck?

Then comes r9-390 which they finally consider as cost efficient, it costs here $374 (tax included). That makes r9-390x good 30% more expensive.
Considering they have it as 13% more cost efficient, I say it is quite accurate.
    Because 390x has 10% more SP, 5% higher clock and costs mentioned 30% more. (1.3*0.9*0.95 = 1.1115 = 111.15% => r9-390 is 11.15% more cost efficient)

I agree performance per price comparisons are often problematic and thus misleading
