Hello all, As the title says I am looking to build a new computer that will last me another 7 years (upgrades over time of course.) Here is my current rig: CPU - Intel Core i7 920 d0 2.67GHz @ 4.1GHz (Corsair H50 Cooled) GPU - EVGA GeForce GTX 680 SC Signature+ 2GB RAM - G.Skill Sniper 12GB DDR3 1600 @ 1731MHz (In triple channel mode) Mobo - ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Boot Drive - Intel 320 Series SSD 120GB (Windows 7 Ultimate x64) Storage Drive - Western Digital Caviar Black SATA 1TB Sound Card - Creative X-Fi Titanium PCI Express Power Supply - Corsair HX850 850W Modular Case - Coolermaster Storm Scout My main purpose for this PC is high end gaming. I want to be able to play new titles maxed out at 1080P on a 144hz monitor. I'm not sure if what I picked is overkill... Here is what I have in mind thus far: CPU - Intel Core i7 5820K or 5930K (not sure which yet, plan to cool with Corsair H110i GTX for overclocking) GPU - EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB (SC+ GAMING w/ACX 2.0+) RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws 16GB (4 x 4GB for quad channel) DDR4 3200 Mobo - Gigabyte GA-X99P-SLI Boot Drive - Mushkin Enhanced Reactor 256GB SSD (For OS & Essential Programs) Storage Drive - Mushkin Enhanced Reactor 1TB SSD (For Games, Media, etc...) Sound Card - Onboard (Realtek ALC1150) Power Supply - Corsair RM850X 850W Modular Case - Corsair Carbide Air 540 Let me know what you think, I've been very out of the loop with new hardware lately and am now again in a situation where I'll be able to put together a new rig from scratch.
Thanks for the input. If you or anyone else have any suggestions that could save me money for the performance I am looking for feel free to let me know. The last time I actually did any serious research and bought new hardware was when the GTX 680 just came out, so its been around 4 years!
Nice setup, stick with the 5820K, add a nice sound card and a pair of headphones or speakers. I prefer mostly external DAC like a ODAC , Focusrite 2i2 (don't need a amp), Native Instrument Audio DJ (don't need a amp), MODI 2. They sound as good as a high-end sound card and don't have issues with drivers just plug n' play
It's only 1080p so perhaps GTX980 6gb is not needed and you could be fine with some GTX970 or AMD R(something). 850W PSU is not needed, 650w will run that build. It's like $10 saved, but Corsair should have something similar from 650W range. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...88&cm_re=seasonic_x650-_-17-151-088-_-Product For gaming, I dont think that there is that huge difference in performance to get 5930K over 6700K (cheaper and newer). And if you go with 6700K, get 2*8gb of RAM.
At this point I am definitely in the initial stages of planning. One of the reasons I chose the 850w PSU was to leave room for SLI in the future. I don't own a 1080p 144hz monitor yet but I may just go with a higher res 60hz monitor instead. A big concern for now is building something that will at least be a solid foundation for the next couple generations as far as CPU & GPU to be able to upgrade & keep up.
If your initial plan is like that and you used your old, venerable PC for so long, doesn't it suggest you are planning to use this for a long time as well? You might as well go with your setup (if you googled that mobo and it's good). Costs more now, but if you can afford it, it should last longer as well, just like your old rig. You'll just need to switch to the 14/16nm generation of video cards 2-3 years from now. But that's how it always goes since video cards grow old faster than CPUs. Nobody knows if the upcoming dx12 games will really put cores beyond 4 to excellent use, but since they theoretically should, it's not likely wasted in games either. No doubt you do something else with your computer as well, and there the cores will definitely help, like in video encoding and such. You should always go for the best you can afford, within reason.
Hi. In your case wait for Broadwell-e and new motherboards x99. For graphics card wait for Polaris or Pascal. If you buy now you going to regreat.
These are all good points. I'm not in a rush to build anything and will definitely do more research on the new hardware that will release soon.
I totally second this, the 5690 Xeon is still an amazing CPU and it overclocks pretty well too with decent cooling. It will feed a 980Ti no problem.
It didn't really even occur to me that there were still good options for a CPU swap... Is the Xeon 5690 compatible with standard desktop boards? Also, do you think it would OC well with a Corsair H50?
I third this, playing BF4 for the first time since my i7 920 and 780Ti barely getting 50-60 fps, tried for the first time last night with Xeon 5650 and 980Ti and was getting 160fps at the same settings ( ok Frostbite scales really well with 6 cores but still ). I also added a USB3.0 PCIE card to my rig and will prob add a Sata 3 one at some point while I wait for a decent upgrade option. Usb3 was only for the new Oculus Rift In 3D Mark Firestrike I get I just over 16000 and I havnt even bothered maxing out my OC or doing any OC with the memory
Yes and yes( I'm on a h100i@4.4ghz, 5690 will overclocks higher as the higher multiplier will put less strain on the mobo ). One of the best sites for info is hardocp http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1820772 Careful with your Asus mobo, some of them have weird quirks with xeons, check the hardocp forum for compatibility, I think its the earlier standard P6T mobos that had issues
I push this motion as well Had a X5650 myself at 4.5ghz. T hese westmere xeons kick ass still and oc well. Quite a few guys have the X5680+ @ 4.8ghz
This has been a huge eye opener. I thought my rig was a little too long in the tooth for another overhaul and was wrong. All I need to do is buy a better case, CPU cooler, X5690, and a GTX 980 TI then my computer will be all set again for new games.
It surprised alot of guys 3 years ago too when the X56XX series was $70 bucks for a xeon 6 core and all revision 2 X58 boards worked with them. I built an X5670 for a buddy @ 4.7ghz with H100, 12 GB Patriot 1600, GTX 970 and my MSI X58 GD45A. Destorys his i5 4440 rig he had. Hell an overclocked 920 @ 4.0 still beats an i5 4440 despite being 5 years older.
Any idea where I can get an X5690 for a decent price? Cheapest I can find are used on EBay for about $380
I was surprised that my rev 1 mobo supported the xeons , if it wasn't for the messed up exchange rate at the moment I would have bought a 5670/80 just to play around with
Definitely considering going the X5690 route now. Does anyone have good suggestions on where I can buy a new one for a decent price? I'm just having a hard time justifying spending $600+ on a X5690 when I could just get a 5820k and X99 mobo for the same money or less.
The reason they were so cheap was due to them being used, there should still be a bunch floating about. I wouldn't worry about buying one second hand, I've yet to hear of one failing on anyone. Although it seems the prices have spiked on them used. A 5670 would be a solid option also, there's a bunch on ebay for cheap.
