Had Win 8,,installed Win 10 update,,a month or so later pc crashed taking some of windows with it. Ok I then installed Win 10 again from a usb flash drive and now it ask me to activate.

Of course I don't have an activation code so they want me to buy it. What happened to the free version off Win 10?

Did you install the same version as you had previously?

Did you skip the product key when asked during install?

Have you tried activating with your Win 8 key?

Yea, with TH2 you can use 7, 8 and 8.1 keys to activate now, and you can use them for installation too

If you skip entering the product key, as long as Windows 10 was previously activated on the machine reinstalling Windows it should automatically activate under a digital entitlement. I guess in this case it isn't operating as intended.
