Reference is going to be loud as hell. If you don't mind i'd go for it.

Loud and insanely hot. I would rather go with a custom 290 then a reference 290X.

Reference 290X are the same as reference 480's. Absolutely horrible until you slap an Accelero IV on it.

Weren't you going to put your old 770 in your kids PC after upgrading the GPU in your own rig?

290X is better than 780 but putting a decent cooler on it will cost you quite more. If that deal for 780 at 150$ is avaible still i would go with that and give that 770 to your kids.

If you wear headphones buy it.

You will want to run a custom fan profile and it will be loud.

Yes that is what I was thinking as well however....I was a bit curious if the 290 x might help with features like FreeSync and Mantle but the later only apply to 2 or 3 games anyway. I like em both to be honest.Thank you guys for your opinion.:)

The 4gb on the 290x makes it better than the 780 imo, given the nature of today's and upcoming games. The reference are loud, but not that bad. I run 3 in cfx lol. Custom profile and they don't get hot, just the sound of a fan.

Does it cool VRAM and the VRM?

The 290x is much much much better than the 780. It's a whole class of card above, there is no comparison really. If you can afford it, get that 290x and custom cool it. You won't regret it.

I know it is but i was referring to your post about Accelero Xtreme IV is being $89.9. Reference 290X 200$+89.9$ or he can get a 780 for 150$.

I have read some horror stories about issues with the reference coolers of the 290Xs and read in reviews that it is highly recommended to get a 3rd party cooler for the card or go to a custom cooler based card. If you could spare the extra money I would go for the 290X plus a 3rd party graphics card cooler and if not then the 780 is still a good choice.

What horror stories? All you'll hear is fans. They will remain cool and run fine and put that 780 in the dirt. People exaggerate the issues with the reference cooler

Just the black screen issues that is all.
