I installed Windows 10 this week and I noticed something weird, when I was playing Lords of The Fallen, the vram that the game was using was much bigger than I have. I have a GTX 970 4gb, but to play at ultra settings, the game requires 6gb, with win 8.1 it was using 3.3gb, and now with win 10 it is using more than 6gb.
Is it a bug or finally Win 10 provides a solution to share system memory with vram?

    I was wondering the same.

GTA5 can do it too, max so far I saw was 3480MB

    COD Ghosts, ~ 3300MB

GTA5, was weird though, at one point it glitched to 14fps and only fix was to lower vram allocation to 3000MB then it went back to 60fps vsynced, few minutes later I set back my old settings and fps didnt glitch anymore, but vram started to climb over 3400MB.

I'm guessing it's a driver issue. DirectX should be identical in Win10 to any other version.

I too have games using more vram. It's actually supposed to happen. I'm getting more fps out of my games since win 10 allows DX to use more Vram if its available.

Also getting less texture popping, and faster tessellation because of it.

WDDM 2.0 for DX11 and below applications should bring only minor optimizations (free-thread create&destroy, DMA buffer early submission forced by UMD to reduce memory requirements) and not a greater VRAM usage. Moreover, Reservation memory model is not exposed to non DX12 applications.
Looks like a driver bug, you should massively report it to NVIDIA.

    Maybe it's Afterburner's fault that's not updated for Win 10 ?

I've noticed this too. I'm guessing it's an error in how MSI Afterburner reads the driver to calculate usage, or the driver not being properly optimized for WDDM 2.0 memory allocation.

I think that is highly unlikely. DX11 is DX11 regardless of which platform uses it. That's the whole point of an API.

Hilbert's benchmark shows no difference between 8.1 and 10. Can you post some of your comparisons?

I've seen it too, seen my vRAM usage go to around 4350MB under Win 10

We got the recycle bin back, maybe......

    Also noticed high VRAM allocation

    Batman AK shows about 4.5gb
Wow used to be under 1GB it now shows near 2GB :/

It shows correct usage on AMD cards. Was playing TW3 last night, game was using 1.2GB Vram maxed so looks like glitch with Nvidia cards.

Could it be the memory that is put into RAM since it isn't accessed frequently enough to be put into VRAM? And that Afterburner just registers it all?

I don't know too much about it, but when I'm playing Batman or Watch Dogs, use more than 2gb of vRAM (and I have 2gb ofc).

But the interesting thing is this, look at the System Ram, match with the extra vRAM i have.

    Look this other pic.

So, i don't know, maybe Windows 10 is using the RAM with some Textures/etc which dont need high bandwidth speed.

PS: This happen with some specific games, like GTA V, Watch Dogs, Batman AK. Games like Witcher 3 shows normal vRAM usage. (1.1~1.3gb)

That is system ram you looking at not vram

I know, but that System Ram, actually match with my extra vRAM and i never saw that amount of system ram while playing on Windows 8

    This is Witcher 3

So it actually happens when i play heavy vram games. And i have a huge performance boost on those heavy vram games, i had to play Watch Dogs with the Ultra Textures MOD (remember "The Worse mod"?), now i can play without it, no stutter and perfect fps. Same with Batman AK.

yous are aware then MSI AB show system ram and Pagefill used too now?

And the memory used shown in the Taskmanager is System ram use too not vram

Win10 much like 7 and 8 all allocated extra ram to gpu which is shown in dxdiag

Win 10 show 5gb total ram for my gpu in dxdiag and in win 7 it showed 4gb total in dxdiag

Consider 760gtx has 2gb ram msi is only gona show max 2gb vram usage cause it cant actual use more, but msi also shows system ram, and pagefiles used swtor easily uses 3.5gb of system ram (taskmanager)

This is not what we're talking about. The discussion is that Afterburner is reporting the wrong amount of VRAM/VRAM usage under Windows 10. Not system ram or pagefile usage.

AB reports correct VRAM for me in all my games

Swtor,Skyrim,AVP, metro etc all show correct vram atlest for me, what it dont show is voltage for me it show 0 in win 10

Not for me, it shows nearly double my actually Vram amount most of the time.
