I recently received an Alienware Area 51 R2 setup with a GTX 980 card. i got the setup used and at a decent price. I use it mainly with a 1920x1200 Dell monitor. Do you guys think it is worth it to sell the 980 and get the Ti version?
Okay thanks. I may rethink it shortly since I am probably getting a 4k TV which I will also hook up to the computer. But then again even one 980 Ti may not be enough for 4k. And I won't splurge on two cards.
4k just isn't viable right now for single card solutions, and iirc both AMD and Nvidia are at the peak of their production cycles (Maxwell and GCN). Wait for Pascal before you jump on this bandwagon. Or consider a 2560x1600 monitor(why buy a tv for pc gaming?) which has 78% ppi more than your current which should satisfy your master race urges...
I agree on that no single card can handle 4K, however a 4K 55+ inch with 60hz refresh rate TV will be cool. I would go with that over monitor. You can also watch TV with it. But yes to chip in to this thread, stick with the gtx 980 and wait for a year or 2 till gpus can handle 4K. As far as the monitor/TV goes, i would wait till they get a bit cheaper and better, but if you want to have a huge TV with 4K @60Hz for bragging right, you go for it. And I guess you can also hook it up to your gaming rig and play games at higher than 1080p or 1200p resolution. The gtx 980 should be able to handle some games at 1440p and few at even 4k at max settings with 60+ fps if they are not graphically demanding (e.g. Dishonored, Bio-shock, Resident Evil revelations, Deadspace, etc.).
The 4k tv I'll get is mainly for watching TV. But I'll connect it to my PC like my current TV is to use it with Plex to watch videos. I'll hold off on the 980 Ti for now as people have advised.
Don't change your card yet. Save up the money for maybe the next Ti (next year), for now you should be fine with gaming.
I'm able to watch a 30Mbps 4k movie with software decoding with about 15% CPU usage, less than 10% with QuickSync. You shouldn't have issues with that Tested with "4K Chimei inn 30 mbps 2160p UHD.mp4"
980ti IMHO is hot, power hungry and fails at 4K gaming. Unless you sli 2 980ti and spend a fortune. 980 on the other hand is cooler, less power demanding, and has better oc potential. And it's a good card for 1080p, even for 60hz+ monitors.
He sorta has a point though... a 980 is sufficient for 1080p... 4k is 4 times more pixels, thus about the same amount more demanding, and a 980 ti isnt 4 times faster than a 980. Youd need to run at least 2 way sli with 980 ti to get good frames in all games at 4k. Personally id say 980 ti 2 way sli for 4k, single 980 ti for 1440p, or a 970 for 1080p.
980 is also horribly priced since the 980ti can out. At its current price it is irrelevant. For just $150 more you can get a 980ti that will spank a 980. 980 needs to be around $450 max imo.
Would be a waste of $$ at that resolution. Even if you really wanted to, there would be little point unless you have a 120/144hz monitor and want to reach 120/144 fps. The 980 is still a powerful card, especially so at 1080p.
A 980Ti is fantastic for 2560x1440, or if you're trying to push insane frame rates (120hz - 144hz). Is there really a game that gives the 980 too much trouble at 1920x1080 (or 1920x1200.... ew)?
Wait until the 980 get a price cut and then buy a second one for SLI.... But the 980 is enough for watching 4K content and you can even use MadVR + DSR to upscale low resolution videos
Because it's an unoptimized POS at the moment. Another highly overrated survival game I bought it, played it for 10 minutes and returned it (thanks Steam).
