Right i'm thinking of switching over to Intel, looked around and thinking of getting the below bits of kit. Currently not sure if I should wait for Sky Lake and make the move to DDR4 Any suggestion? My current plan is the below mobo along with a i7 4790K Asus Z97 Maximus VII Formula http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus...150-ddr3-quad-sli-quad-crossfirex-dp-hdmi-atx
Skylake is around the corner.Just wait a bit,and see what is all about. If Intel doesn't bring what you need, you can buy"old" tech at a lower price. DDR4 is a mixed bag, lower voltage, higher clocks, but not low latency. I will wait until newer chipset start showing up,and see some test.
Go for it. Intel doesnt bring anything über cause lack of competition. If u wait, u can wait forever. I had FX8150 4GHZ and i5 upgade was worth every cent.
Well I'm thinking of waiting to see what Skylake brings plus ill have more cash by then to throw at it. Plus AMD Zen is not going to show till next year.
I went from FX8350 to i7 4790k It is an awesome upgrade games have higher fps and my system is cooler. from any FX8 I would recommend going i7, 8 amd cores to 8 Intel cores going 4 cores would feel like your losing cores even though the i5 is still faster
You are aware that the i7 4790K is a quad core aren't you? It doesn't have more cores, it has Hyper Threading, which means it's a 4 core 8 thread processor. The lower end i5 is a 4 core 4 thread processor.
Yeah wait for <4 weeks for Skylake and Z170, and if that doesn't offer you what you want you can always go buy Haswell - probably even cheaper then too.
I know but 8 is more than 4 even if 4 are fake cores they do help in some programs and who does not like more I had i5 4690k and now I have i7 4790k and it is a lot better at video encoding
They're not 'fake' cores, stating that certain i7's are 8 core CPU's is misleading. You need to read up on HT, as well as a few other things. You can't just run around making statements like that. http://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/...per-threading/hyper-threading-technology.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading
It is better at encoding because it makes use of 8 threads. It is still a quad cpu though. I think intel does have 1 8 core 16 thread cpu but is very expensive. Probably an excellent investment long term even with the price.
I'd say just the opposite, it wouldn't be a good long term investment spending so much on a CPU, because when other 8 core, 16 thread CPU's come out the cost wouldn't be justified on that now. The AMD Zen FX is supposedly 8 core, 16 thread, for example.
Based on what verifiable performance level. My guess is it will be overhyped and wind up being a letdown. At least you know what your getting with intel. Bulldozer was overhyped as usual and was a huge letdown. Hopefully Zen won't be but I doubt it imo. Especially if those slides I saw on it were from amd.
