actually i'm pushimg my cpu to limits, i'm ocing it at 5,1 ghz, my rams are very ancient too, i bought this rig back in 2011 i think with an amd 5870, i only upgraded my gpu with a gtx 980, the performance is really amazing and i never drop from 60 fps in 1080p or 1440p downscaled to 1080, but i think this one can have more performance with a better cpu and ram. So i upgrade now or wait to august to get the new skylake cpu's
You might get a small boost with a quad core CPU and faster memory? What is the make and model of the motherboard?
mi actual motherboars is a ASUS P8B75, i7 2600k is actually a quad core processor, sandy bridge isn't compatible with ddr3 1600 or faster only with 1333mhz and below so overclocking them or using faster ram will be useless, that's why i'm using my rams at very low latency. i will wait then, until my cpu burns because of those 5.1ghz or when a good succesor to my cpu appears.
Just reduce the OC a bit then, those 5Ghz are more than enough for gaming. Unless you're rendering or using the CPU for anything else, I'm fairly sure you could go lower. Just try it out and see if you notice big problems or performance drops while playing, all at your own risk though.
That's not true at all. Plenty of people use fast memory, even up to 2400. Sandy Bridge's memory controller isn't quite as tolerant as the later chips, but it's easily capable of over 1333. That was just Intel's specification at the time, not an actual limit.
Oops, quad core, guess I should have checked out the CPU more before looking stupid. Guess you should hold off until your ready to replace the CPU, memory and motherboard.
Yeah there is no point in upgrading at this point if you just game. Plus the only viable upgrade for you would be X99 at this point. I would wait and you can go the x99 route at some point or wait until AMD releases their 8 core Zen CPUs. Or if Skylake has something big to offer.
2600k at 5Ghz would beat a 4790k stock in probably any game. After such a trade you'll have to hope that Haswell chip will do atleast 4.5-4.6Ghz for you too even feel some difference, small though.
any Sandy Bridge i7 is still a great CPU for gaming. On top of that, an i7 running at 5Ghz is about as good as your CPU gaming horsepower is going to get these days. I haven't OC'd my 4790K but I doubt I'd hit 5.0Ghz on this Devil's Canyon. My girlfriend is running a stock speed 2600K and it seems fine to me. You're good there. I would blow your geek wad on something like a gaming monitor (as it sounds like you have the upgrade itch) or any other component that could use it.
I would wait man. Unless your plan is to sell your **** to buy new **** than you shouldn't wait because the longer you do the less money you get towards new stuff. I don't see any reason to upgrade your cpu especially if it is really running 24/7 at 5.1ghz. Upgrading to anything out or soon to be out is just gonna be a waste of money side grade. If your not trying to sell your old stuff for the upgrade than I would wait until something actually worth upgrading to come out.
