Steam is monetizing mods. Yes, you read that right.

I see this as a good and a bad thing.

People can be compensated for work they've created, for the time they've put into it. That's the good.

The bad now, well simple. People will make mods just for money and not for the community, people will put anything out there to make money so quality could either go down or go up, or people will get greedy and demand a huge lump sum of money for their mods.

    Modders only get 25%.

Not even at 50% would it be fair.

We already have F2P, Pay2Win, DLC, Freemium and terrible stuff like Steam's "Early Acess".

Do we really need more monetization in the gaming industry? Screw Steam. Seriously.

I don't think any of those Skyrim mod makers went into it to make money. If I was to put effort and time into a mod, I'd make a website and leave a donate button for those who want to contribute. I wouldn't force it upon them.

Also, modders getting 25% of the profit (if that's correct) is just lol. If Valve take the rest of the cut, they can go f*(k themselves.

The bit about 25% is accurate. Screenshots of the agreement were shared. They even are eligible to receive payment only after they have accumulated at least $100 after valve's deduction. THen and only then they are eligible. I've read that there's also a waiting period of 3 months before disbursement.

well considering we now have paid patches (dark souls 2 dx11, metro redux, deusExHR) and placebo hd remakes (dark souls 2, sleeping dogs etc), i suppose this was the next logical step.

This goes one of two ways:
    1. Sites like moddb etc get shutdown and modders are forced to signup to this workshop crap or face dcma'd/cease desist for any unauthorized content under the reverse or modifications clause...or
    2. Valve remembers their place learns not to bite the hand that feeds them.

Valve wouldnt be **** if it werent for user created content provided free by and for the pc community. Stick to not making games and vaporware.

Cs and Tf started as free mods. Do they think that joke of series hl is why they're still around.

people saying that their work is being sold in the workshop without their consent

cant they report that though, they should be able to prove they own the mod and then valve bans the persons account.

shame on those people for selling free mods, that other people made

thats worse then Chinese ripped dvds..

Heres my counter offer: 90 - 10. I'll pay 10% and they can cover the rest. I wont purchase beth or valve products unless they're on sale for 90% off. Hows that for a contract.

    only good thing about it.

income to dev pushed dev to do more work.

    but not at 25%

That's the part people aren't getting. The modders will be doing work for the publisher/distributors.

It turns mods into community made DLC. It's actually brilliant. Hail corporate!

lol the user reviews for skyrim http://store.steampowered.com/app/72850/.

The fact that its on sale says alot.

Also, other than one mod being removed, none of the more well known gaming site are reporting this. Not even rps.

This has been in the works for awhile.
