Ok ao i just built a killer new PC Here are the Specs 5820k Intel X99x killer mobo 850pro SSD 1tb WD spare drive gtx980 GFX card 16g Ram ddr4 34inch LG Ultra Wide Monitor "debating to return for Dells 34inch curved" Anyways i havent overclocked much in my recent PCs but always dabble with it. WIth this X99x MOBO i used the bios overclock for the ram and adjusted my turbo settings to 4.0 then to 4.2 and yesterday 4.4. Played all games ran 3d mark and scored very high. Here is my issue. I noticed a crackling noise that was coming from my PC, it sounded like a HD cycling. I figured it was my WD tb drive since a SSD has no moving parts. Thing is it was always making this noise even at idle and was starting to annoy me. I tried unplugging that drive yet still heard that noise... So it dawned on me the only thing that i had changed was the turbo speed from 4.2 to 4.4. So i went back into the bios and put back to the 4.2 and to my surprise that crackling noise has stopped... Any idea what was taking place here? Isnt just changing the turbo speeds increasing the core speeds when its needed in a game or application? Why would it make this noise at idle doing nothing? If i wanted to go back to the 4.4 what could i do to stop that noise? Could it be low voltage? and what part of the PC is actually making that noise?
Ill have to open and look when I get a chance on the PS.. I was thinking that as well. I know its a 750w higher end unit from newegg but its older probably 4 - 5 years... I don't think its the sound card, the cracking is coming from a component inside the case.. I mean it sounds identical to a hard drive cycling data.. Its not very loud but when I hear it I always hear it and it annoys me.. That being said I can just leave the turbo set at 4.2 and I cant tell a difference but its still always nice OCing and hitting high numbers on benches.
Can you list your PSU? It might be possible that your PSU doesn't spin cooler until it gets hot enough. Main parts that can make sounds are : - PSU - CPU cooler - GPU cooler Try opening your case and running prime95 to put some heat on. You should be able to locate sound source.
its a tx750w Corsair. Whats funny is the noise is constant regardless if at idle at a windows sceen doing nothing or playing Dragon Age at ultra settings.. It doesn't get louder or quieter... Now when I heard the noise and thought it was the WD HD I just removed the power from the HD but not the sata cable... Could the drive still make the noise with no power?
Im using the same model. That should be good enough, but you did say it was getting older... No power, no spin. What kind of CPU cooler are you using? ETA: Is there any change you have a dangling wire tapping a fan. Happened to me once, and could be tied to temps.
Hehe yeah, I know that one. Scared the sh*t out of me. That noise would be concerning to me too. Maybe your PSU is getting old, so the fan inside might actually show it's age and the bearing might make itself heard. Also, are there any other fans, including the 980's, that might be making noise? Mind you, most 980s have idle off fans, so as long as you have a MSI, Asus, or EVGA (and probably others not comming to my mind right now) are off the list.
