Ok, i've never been more dissapointed and frustrated in my entire life!? I had cheap Asrock K10N78D, With Phenom 2 X4 955BE C3 and 4 GB ddr2-800 memory. Max OC on CPU was 4.1 GHZ, NB: 2600. Far Cry 3 AVG fps 30. I bought GA-990XA-UDP3 yesterday. And HyperX Fury DDR3 1866 4GB The nightmares started. I bought this board so I can overclock my phenom little more, and DDR3 support. The board is absolutley pure piece of crap. I have thrown my money down the toilet. I can't OC my Phenom more than 4.1 Ghz , NB 2600, just like my old board. No matter what voltage increase, after 4.1 Ghz it's just unstable. Same goes for the NB. My gaming performace is actually worse!! Far Cry 3 avg 25 fps. What the f***. GA-990XA-UDP3 is three times more expensive then my old board, it's newer and should be much better, but it is WORSE! And ddr3 didn't help my gaming performace. The only difference is i had dual-channel ddr2 4GB, now i have single-channel ddr3 4GB. I'm so sad and frustrated now, I spend a lot of money on this board. I don't know what to do, if anyone have some kind of advice about this board, please share. It is rev. 3. I can't adjust memory timings or memory multipler. It always stays the same. Cl8 800 mhz. bios update didn't help either
That's probably because the CPU itself has a limit and you hit it. Some CPUs just won't take a high overclock. Mine doesn't - unless I pump an obscene amount of voltage to it and at that point, it's not worth it for me. For instance, my CPU at 3.4 Ghz is stable with 1.31v, but 3.6 Ghz is only stable with 1.4v. That is a huge increase in voltage for a lousy 200 Mhz. You already had a 900 Mhz overclock! What were you looking to get with the new mainboard ? Also, your performance may be worse because your RAM is in single channel mode now. Edit: I just looked at your old board and I'd say it's impressive that you got such an overclock stable with it. Look at it like this, your new board has a much better VRM setup, so your overclock isn't stressing the board as much. Mainboards are overrated when it comes to performance increases unless your going from single to SLI configurations and things like that.
I managed to push my Phenom to the 4.3 Ghz max, NB 2800. Now it runs good, my graphics card overclocking settings were reseting to defaults. I actually gained 4-5 fps in games. Ok so far. I'm planing to upgrade my graphics card and processor. What is the Best AMD processor for gaming/overclocking on the market?
Don't blame the board, even 4Ghz is doing well on a Phenom II. They don't all overclock the same. I'm also surprised you did as well as you did on that Asrock board. I fried an M3N78 running my 955 at 4.4Ghz. About the CPU, grab the cheapest 83xx you can find then overclock it, possibly with the cooler you have now. And get another 4GB stick of ram...... My 2c.
Fx-8320 Check out the AMD FX-8320. Should give you the best overclocking performance boost, for the price.
You got one 4GB memory stick? 8GB would help and running your memory in dual channel should improve the performance
