    Hey guys,

I am really at the end of my wits here. A week ago I bought an ATI r9 290.

Before installing the new card I went into safe mode and removed the old drivers with DDU. After booting and installing the latest drivers, my system froze, went to blackscreen and rebooted.
I did expansive testing. If I log on to windows and just leave it alone, the system runs stable in idle.
But as soon I do sth like start firefox or any other action (folder browsing) it frezes, black screen and reboots.

Under safe mode or with the standart VGA drivers from windows the system runs stable.

I was able to get into Afterburner and change voltage up to 25, even downclocked memory and mghz but to no result. Everytime I tried it the system collapsed. Its really frustrating.

My system specs should be in my profile. For my PSU, I run a 780W unit but any further info I would have to dig up. It has two x 6 Pin and 1 x 2 Pin connector which are all plugged into the card.

My former card was a 270 and worked flawlessly even OC and under heavy usage.

    Any ideas?!

Hey, so I tried a different driver 14.7-RC3. But that didnt work. My GPU works at 48 - 50 degrees celcius in idle. My motherboards bios is up to date, as with all the win updates. I tried deinstalling MSI Afterburner, again. No effect. I attached a picture of my PSU.

    Cant post links,

Safe to say your PSU is the problem. Buy a PSU from a reputable brand

I'm betting that the PSU is breaking down trying to power that 290....

The link I posted was for the GPU BIOS, but as others have mentioned, Id look at getting a decent PSU

Okay, so Ill get a new PSU. What shall I look out for besides buying a brand? And if yes, which brands?

Best value for price. Whatever is necessary to get this card running and not a penny more. But I am buying in Ger so prices will be different. Just some key points would help, what pref. do I have to look for?

In the meantime, you could try a profile in Afterburner to lock the clocks, just set them as low as they'll go, as i used to get black screens and BSODs just when on the desktop on my old rig, just by opening/closing programs like Firefox etc... (gaming was fine), found that when you opened them, the clocks would go berserk, really spiking up and down, figured that when they did a major spike up or down, it was enough to crap it out, so i made a profile in Afterburner to lock the clocks at their lowest to use as my idles, and never had another black screen, BSOD since on the desktop when opeing/closing programs, was rock solid.

Easy way to check is, have the CCC open on the Overdrive so you can see the clocks, and then open/close programs like Firefox etc...., see what they do. :)

Can't go wrong with a Corsair PSU.

Not all Corsair units are high quality. Corsair doesn't actually make power supplies. Instead, they outsource PSU production to various manufacturers such as SeaSonic, Super Flower, etc. Same goes for Antec. It's best to research any PSU you're considering buying. If there isn't a favorable review, move on.

Definitely sounds like a psu issue. I'd recommend any Superflower PSU, 750W or higher.
